'The
Voice' Recap: The Top 12 Perform

In the first of
the season 13 live shows for The Voice, the Top
12 perform for the coaches to see who will be eliminated.
Adam
Levine's team has Jon
Mero, Addison
Agen and Adam
Cunningham.
Blake
Shelton still has Red
Marlow, Keisha
Renee and Chloe
Kohanski.
Jennifer
Hudson's Davon

Fleming, Shi'Ann
Jones and Noah
Mac are
left
Miley Cyrus boasting
Ashland
Craft, Janice
Freeman and Brooke
Simpson.

The remaining 12 are all very eclectic singers,
with
styles varying wildly even inside each team. With the first
live show, the
performers will surely be singing as if their lives depend
on it. And it does,
as America votes to narrow the team even further in the
first results show of
the season.
The performers open the show
with confessions about why they sing. In a black and white
montage, each singer
admits all the things that inspire them to sing. Husbands,
coaches, tribe,
children, small towns and a whole list of other reasons are
among the
motivations for this season's performers. It's a
moving reminder that these are
real people chasing their real-life dreams. Host
Carson
Daly announces that it's a night of special
dedications and reminds
America that voting is open now.

Brooke Simpson ("Praying") -- Team
Miley
Brooke dedicates her live
performance to America, with a message of
strength and hope. She identifies her style as "pop
soul" and characterizes
herself somewhere in the middle between Britney Spears and
James Brown. This
song represents who she is as performer, exhibiting her
depth as an artist. Her
presence on stage is commanding and assertive. Jennifer says
she "consumes the
room." You definitely can't look away when Brooke
is singing. Why would you want
to?

 Red Marlow ("Church on Cumberland
Road") -- Team Blake
Red, after a few jokes about
Blake's status as the sexiest
man alive, dedicates his performance to his dad. He's
the one that taught Red
how to play guitar, and they have been playing bluegrass
music together ever
since. Red has such a good nature that this song selection
seems to fit him
perfectly. It's upbeat but challenging, and he has to
overcome a lot of
rollicking background music with his on-stage presence. Adam
says what the crowd
is already reacting to: "It's real and
authentic." Blake connects with his
energy and even calls it
"sexy."

In a
break between performers, Carson reveals the winner of the
bet
that Adam and Blake made over album sales. If Adam's
band, Maroon 5, sold more
records, Blake has to call him "the greatest there ever
was." And if Blake won,
Adam has to call him "Captain Country." It looks
like Blake won't be Captain
Country at all. He's the loser of the bet, having come
in behind Adam's debut at
number two on the Billboard
Chart.

Shi'Ann
Jones ("Vision of Love") --
Team Jennifer

This is an
ambitious choice for Shi'Ann. Mariah Carey has some very
large shoes to fill,
but Jennifer is confident she can carry this song and make
it her own. It's a
classic, so she has the added pressure of making it original
to her, yet
delivering it the way people are used to hearing it.
Shi'Ann grapples with her
shyness, but you can tell she's really coming into her
own when she's on stage.
She always wows the coaches, and they lavish praise all over

her.

Jon Mero ("Why I Love You") --
Team
Adam

Jon
dedicates his song to his community that means so much to
him. He sends a
shout-out to his hometown, Des Moines, and the church he
grew up in. His voice
is impeccable, and he hits higher notes than I knew were
possible. The coaches
eat up his performance, and Jennifer even threatens to throw
her shoe -- a sign
that a performance went really, really
well.

Ashland Craft ("Delta Dawn") -- Team
Miley
Ashland and
Miley go back and forth about song choice, but they finally
settle on the
country classic. Ashland dedicates her song to her family.
She remembers sitting
around on hay bales with them, watching The
Voice in the yard. She is a
confident performer, and she delivers a pretty solid set.
Jennifer is a big fan
of hers (her second biggest, according to Miley) and gives
her the praise she
deserves.

 Adam Cunningham ("Against All Odds")
-- Team Adam

Adam Levine proposes that Adam C.
perform this song like Chris Stapleton would, and the result
is powerful in
rehearsals. Adam C. dedicates his song to his family for
supporting him. Both
Adams have toddler daughters, and Adam C. chokes up when he
thanks them. He gets
off to a rocky start, stumbling over the first few lines. He
struggles with the
song, but at least he sounds really good during the parts he
does know. Nerves
have gotten the best of Adam during this round, but
hopefully his potential will
carry him through.

Chloe Kohanski ("Thank You") -- Team
Blake

Chloe dedicates her song to her
boyfriend. She connects to the
non-glamour of the relationship in the song, and it reminds
her of the way she
feels about her boyfriend. Chloe's voice is so unique
that sometimes its hard to
hear anything but the sound of it. She does her best to get
a handle of the Dido
song, and she mostly nails it. As amazing as she always
sounds, she could
probably sing the phone book and make it sound amazing.
Miley thinks she's a
total superstar, and it's hard to deny the power of her
presence.

Davon Fleming ("Love on Top") --
Team Jennifer

Davon
dedicates his song to his city, Balitmore. He credits it
with helping shape his
identiy, and he chooses the Beyonce tune as a tribute. This
song takes a good
amount of confidence to perform it live, but Davon has
always had his fair share
of swagger. He's among Jennifer's favorites, and the
coach is on her feet by the
end of the song. The other coaches are equally flabbergasted
by the performance,
and a little shoe-throwing mayhem
ensues.

Addison Agen ("She Used to Be Mine")
-- Team Adam

This high
school indie performer dedicates her song to her mother. She
raised six
children, worked full-time as a music therapist and was also
the worship leader
at church. Addison is singing a Sara Bareilles song, and she
relates to the
other songwriter. For such a young performer, she has an
uncanny ability to take
up the entire stage. It's a slow, methodical song, but
it gives her plenty of
time to showcase her natural talents. Miley picks up on her
stillness as well
and applauds her confidence. Adam calls her a pillar of
class and dignity, and
that is high praise for a 16-year-old
girl.

 Keisha Renee ("Midnight Train to
Georgia") -- Team Blake

Keisha
picks a Gladys Knight song, but Blake arranges it with a
little bluegrass flair.
She sounds amazing, and the world of country music better
watch out for this
singer. She's the real deal. The coaches are all on
their feet when she
finishes, and they are all completely wowed. Blake is
particularly impressed
with the beauty of the performance, and you can tell how
proud he is of
her.

Noah Mac ("Speed of Sound") --
Team
Jennifer

Noah is so
young and fresh-faced, but his voice has an experience to
it. He is very
soulful, so choosing a Coldplay cover is a bit of a
departure for him. He
dedicates it to all the aspiring singers so they know
somebody is rooting for
them. He puts his own imprint on the song, and the coaches
love it. Jennifer can
see him winning all the awards, and her confidence is enough
to make him feel
like a star.

Janice Freeman ("The Story") -- Team
Miley

Janice
presents a very unusual combination of soul and hard rock.
As a cancer survivor,
she's been through so much. She dedicates her song to
her husband because he's
been there with her through it all. Janice always deliver,
but as her song says,
this was absolutely made for her. She killed it, like she
does every single
time. Blake even takes his boot off to throw it, claiming he
hasn't taken it off
in 10 years. Miley is in tears, singing her
praises.
