Lori Loughlin Felt She Did What Any Mother Would Do, Report Says
Ron Dicker 6 hours ago
Lori Loughlin is "still not ready" to make a plea to charges in the college admissions scam, according to CNN ― and a new report may explain why.
The actress doesn't yet accept that it was against the law for Loughlin and husband Mossimo Giannulli to pay $500,000 to have their two daughters admitted to the University of Southern California posing as crew athletes, according to People, which cited an unnamed source "close to the actress."
"To her, it wasn't egregious behavior," the source said. "Was it entitled and perhaps selfish? Perhaps. But she didn't see it as being a legal violation." The source added that it was "taking some time for it to sink in."
Loughlin, who starred as Aunt Becky on "Full House," thought she was being a good parent getting her daughters into the prestigious private university, the insider said. "From the beginning, she didn't want to take a deal, because she felt that she hadn't done anything that any mom wouldn't have done, if they had the means to do so," People quoted the person as saying.
Loughlin and Giannulli are delaying a plea deal because "they are hoping to just let this play out in the judicial system," CNN reported Thursday, citing an insider close to the pair.
"They are innocent until proven guilty," the source added.
Loughlin's failure to acknowledge the seriousness of her situation has been the subject of several reports this week. Sources noted that she had been "in complete denial" of her predicament until recently, and thought prosecutors were "bluffing."
Loughlin and Giannulli were among numerous prominent figures charged last month with mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in the sprawling college admissions investigation. "Desperate Housewives" actress Felicity Huffman, among others, agreed to plead guilty this week.
Then federal prosecutors ratcheted up the pressure on Loughlin, slapping her with additional charges of conspiring to commit fraud and money laundering. She and her husband could face decades behind bars if convicted, although a maximum sentence would be highly unlikely.

Teen fights off charging grizzly with bear spray after being pinned face-down on the ground
Teen fights off charging grizzly with bear spray after being pinned face-down on the ground originally appeared on abcnews.go.com
A teenager who encountered a bear in Montana on Sunday was pinned to the ground by the animal but managed to escape using bear spray, authorities said.
The 17-year-old boy told wildlife officials that he was walking down a hill in a remote area some 30 miles south of Ennis on Sunday afternoon when he heard a noise behind him. The teen said he turned around to find a bear charging at him, according to a statement from the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
The boy was carrying bear repellent in his backpack, but the animal pushed him up against a tree before he was able to react, he told wildlife officials.
The teen said the bear held him up against the tree momentarily before letting go. The boy fell over and tried to crawl between two trees for protection, he told wildlife officials, but the bear "pinned him face-down on the ground."
He managed to reach over his shoulder and grab the bear repellent from his backpack. He sprayed the bear, which then backed away and left the area.
The boy made radio contact with his family, who were staying at a cabin in the area. He was taken to Madison Valley Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Wildlife officials will continue to monitor the area, which is well within occupied bear habitat, but no further management action is being taken at this time, according to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
"Based on the teen's description of the bear's behavior, the bear was mostly likely a grizzly bear," the department said in the statement Monday. "The bear's behavior in this incident appears to be typical of surprise close encounters."
The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks recommended the following tips for avoiding negative encounters with bears:
--Be prepared and aware of your surroundings.
--Carry and know how to use bear spray.
--Travel in groups whenever possible.
--Stay away from animal carcasses.
--Follow U.S. Forest Service food storage regulations.
--If you encounter a bear, never approach it. Back away slowly and leave the area.

Shooting on Nipsey Hussle Procession Route Leaves 1 Dead and Several Injured
The celebration of Nipsey Hussle's life ended in tragedy on Thursday.
Chief Michel Moore of the Los Angeles Police Department tweeted following a procession for the late rapper that a drive-by shooting left one person dead and several others injured.
"In the midst of this procession we have a multi-four shooting at 103 Street and Main Street," he wrote, adding that the victims were three black males and one black female, ages ranging from 30 to 50 years old. "Tragically one is deceased. Suspects in a gray Hyundai fired on the victims."
Moore concluded his message by pleading, "We must stop this senseless violence."
The shooting occurred just hours after a memorial service was held for Hussle at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The tribute to the rapper included a performance by Stevie Wonder and a reading of a letter from former president Barack Obama. Hussle's longtime girlfriend, Lauren London, also tearfully honored him.
Hussle, whose real name is Ermias Asghedom, was fatally shot on March 31 outside his clothing store in South Los Angeles. He was 33.
The rapper is survived by London, a 34-year-old model and actress whom Hussle had been dating since 2013. The couple shared a 2-year-old son Kross together, and he also had a 7-year-old daughter named Emani from a previous relationship.
Here's more on the memorial service:

Injured Auburn gymnast: 'My pain is not your entertainment'
Samantha Cerio does not want to be reminded of the graphic injuries she suffered Friday night.
The Auburn gymnast dislocated both her knees in a freak landing while performing her floor exercise routine. The video of her injury went viral because of how dramatic her injuries were. And Cerio would like people to show some consideration. She posted a message to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon asking people to stop posting the video of her injury.
"Those of you posting and tagging me in the video of my injury, I am asking you to please stop. Going through the pain and seeing my knees bent unnaturally in real life was horrible enough, but to continue to see it from videos/pictures because some people feel entitled to repost it is not okay. I have family, friends, and teammates who do not need to see me getting injured over and over again. My pain is not your entertainment."
Thursday afternoon, Cerio made her Twitter account private.
She made an understandable request in that message and it's a not-so-subtle reminder that the people who compete in athletic competitions (and suffer injuries in those competitions) are not robots. The absolute least people can do is to not tag her social media accounts in their posts.
Cerio had surgery Tuesday
Auburn gymnastics coach Jeff Graba said Tuesday that Cerio's knee surgery lasted approximately 2.5 hours and was an "extreme success." A senior in 2018-19, Cerio announced her retirement from gymnastics after the injuries.
Cerio also has a big post-surgery goal, too. She's getting married in June and Graba told NBC News that Cerio said she wanted to be able to walk down the aisle.

'Smart guy' Florida test taker to plead guilty in U.S. college admissions scandal
By Nate Raymond
BOSTON (Reuters) - A former counselor at a Florida private school is expected to plead guilty on Friday to secretly taking college placement tests for the children of wealthy parents as part of the largest admissions fraud scheme uncovered in U.S. history.
Mark Riddell, 36, faces charges stemming from his role in the scheme that prosecutors said allowed wealthy parents including the actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin to use cheating and bribes to help their children secure spots at universities like Yale, Georgetown and the University of Southern California.
Court documents showed that Riddell was due to plead guilty in Boston federal court to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Asked at a news conference in March how Riddell knew the exam answers, U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling said he was "just a really smart guy."
Riddell is among 50 people who prosecutors say participated in schemes to cheat on entrance exams and pay $25 million in bribes over eight years, before a wave of arrests in last month's "Operation Varsity Blues."
California college admissions adviser William "Rick" Singer has pleaded guilty to facilitating the cheating scam and bribing coaches to present the parents' children as fake athletic recruits.
Prosecutors said that as part of the scheme, Singer arranged beginning in 2012 to have Riddell either secretly take SAT and ACT college entrance exams in place of his clients' children or correct their answers.
Singer admitted to advising his clients to seek extra time for their children to take the exams, including by claiming they had learning disabilities, and then have their children take the exams at two test centers he controlled.
He controlled those test centers, a Texas high school and a private college preparatory school in California, by bribing test administrators who would then allow Riddell to proctor the exams and carry out the cheating, prosecutors said.
Riddell, who worked at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, received $10,000 for each student's test, prosecutors said.
In exchange, Singer's clients paid him $15,000 and $75,000 per test by making donations to his charity, according to prosecutors. Many children were unaware their parents arranged for the cheating, prosecutors said.
The clients included Huffman, who paid to have Riddell in 2017 secretly correct her daughter's answers on the SAT, prosecutors said.
Huffman and 12 other parents agreed on Monday to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

South African model Thando Hapo is the first woman with albinism to cover Vogue
"I once said to a close friend that it would really be lovely to see a woman with albinism on a Vogue Cover," South African model, activist and lawyer Thando Hopa wrote on her Instagram. "I would not have imagined that that woman would be me."
With her eyes gently closed and her head tilted towards the sky, Hopa has made history as the first woman with albinism to grace the cover of Vogue. The model is the highlight of Vogue Portugal's "Africa Motherland" edition, an homage to Africa as the cradle of humanity, reads a tweet from the magazine's Twitter account. The issue seeks to celebrate the full spectrum of African beauty and also features Sudanese model Alek Wek in an alternate cover of the April edition.
Being the one to achieve this important first was "overwhelming" for Hopa. The South African model shared what this "footnote in history" meant on her Instagram. "I'm emotional, because I see progress and get to form part of a progressive story and narrative," Hopa wrote. "I got to a place in my career where I appreciate every specimen of my body and knowing that wherever I go, my existence, the way it is, has always and will always be enough."
In her cover story, Thando got candid about growing up with white skin in a "pigmented society" and how her albinism fueled her passion for activism. She also shut down the idea that inclusion in the fashion industry is just a fleeting "trend."
"I do not think that human bodies should ever be called "trends." I have a serious problem with people who say albinism is a trend, or vitiligo is a trend. Or people who say 'It is so cool to be black right now,'" Hopa said. "Human bodies are not disposable."
The decision to celebrate African beauty comes amidst a recent campaign for the publication to start an international edition for Africa. In an interview with Reuters, supermodel Naomi Campbell, a contributing editor for British Vogue, expressed a need for Vogue's presence in Africa: "There should be a Vogue Africa. We just had Vogue Arabia— it is the next progression. It has to be."
