Songland 2020 Episode 7 Recap Featuring Boyz II Men (VIDEO)

05/25/2020 mj santilli RecapsSonglan

Songland season 2 continues tonight on NBC featuring legendary 90s R&B group Boyz II Men. In the episode, songwriters will pitch their compositions to the the guest artist and the panel. Afterward, songwriter/producers Ryan TedderShane McAnally and Ester Dean work with the artists.. The group will then choose one song to record.

Everything you need to know about tonight's episode featuring Boyz II Men:

Boyz II Men are looking for songs that are memorable, easy to remember and hard to forget. But they also are looking for something contemporary, "more modern day."  Ryan calls the group the "original GOATs" because of their string of hits in the 90s. Some of you may remember band member Shawn Stockman as a judge on the NBC a cappella competition from a few years ago, The Sing-Off.

The Artists Pitch their Songs

Zak Waters – Bad Things – Zak is a musician, singer-songwriter, DJ, and record producer from Los Angeles. After highschool, his band got signed to Universal/Motown. He grew up on early R&B stuff like Boyz II Men. Zak wrote the song he's pitching after a break up. The lyric, "Try to remember the bad things," serves as a reminder to stay clear eyed about a relationship, even as times passes.  The jazzy, soulful verses lead to a surprising chorus, that the panel really digs. Ryan calls it a "unicorn chorus." They all like it so much, they work on the verses to make the chorus pop even more..

Juan and Lisa Winans – Maybe –  Juan is a third generation member of the famed gospel family, the Winans. Mom & Pop Winans are his grandparents. He is the son of Carvin Winans a member of The Winans singing group. Lisa Kimmey was a member of the group Out of Eden. The couple married in 2007. The song was inspired by Lisa and took Juan two years to finish. The song has a retro vibe that feels suitable for the group. But with Lisa handling the vocals, the verse is limp, and the melody boring. But when Juan takes over the vocals at Ester's request, the song comes alive. The lyrics are trite either way, but he imbues so much feeling into the words, it changes everything. The panel agrees, however, that the story needs to be clearer.  Interesting that the panel never acknowledges their famous family.

Charles Infamous – Jukebox – He is a hip hop producer and artist from Lancaster, Penna. The song is about nostalgia "taking the vibe back to the classics," says Charles. The tune has a fun, bouncy vibe. Very chill. The mentions of specific nostalgia like "Michael J Fox" are a little too referential. He effortlessly breaks into a rap half way through the performance. He's very smooth. Shane loves the melody in the verse. But group member Wanya Morris suggests a bigger melody for the hook. He's got a point. The melody is sweet, but a little monotonous. Ester notices the "sight" references in the song. She suggests changing the name to "20/20."

ChrisLee – Love Struck – A singer/songwriter and record producer from Essex Fells, NJ, Chris moved to Los Angeles six months ago to pursue a musical career. Currently he's doing production work and "sync stuff." Plus, he plays live music for his girlfriend's yoga class. The song is about her. "Love Struck" is another smooth, jazzy effort, but with a sexy vibe. The group seems really impressed. They play with the melody a bit, while Shane tweaks the lyrics. Ryan wants to simplify the words, make them more human.

Boyz II Men make their choice

Results! Zak Waters, ChrisLee and Juan and Lisa Winans advance. The group likes the song from Charles Infamous, but feel they don't have the time to get the song where it needs to be. Charles is eliminated.

Producer sessions

Ester Dean produces ChrisLee – In a Facetime call, Wayna confesses that he thought Chris' song was the closest to complete. He wants to retain the vibe, but make the story clearer in the second verse. Next, Ester and Chris work on harmonies.

Shane McAnally produces Juan and Lisa Winans – Shane works to make sure the concept that the group understands–a solid couple who nevertheless has hard times–is clearly understood. He admires the couple's willingness to be vulnerable. Later, they chat with Shawn about changing the hook. "It has to feel real," he says. After changes, Shane feels the song is "more digestible, less dated." He suggests Juan sing lead with harmonies from Lisa.

Ryan Tedder produces Zak Waters – Ryan wants to steer the song away from Neo Soul. Which frankly, I don't understand? But apparently the group wants to go in a pop direction. Ryan's idea is to "pop up" the verses, but keep what's best about the "unicorn" chorus. After Ryan makes some changes, Zak notes that "it sounds more like a radio song now.

The Artists present their newly produced songs

Chris Lee – Love Struck – Ester added a pre-chorus at the beginning of the song, which seems pointless? Although I like the song, it's hard to imagine Boyz II Men cutting this record. It sounds more like a Robin Thicke joint. The group loves the vibe.

Juan and Lisa Winans – What If It's Love –  Shane notes that he drew from his own life when rewriting the lyrics, bringing real life in order to scratch below the surface. Even the title is more specific now.  This song has come a long way from the original. The hook is 1000 percent more listenable. And I don't understand why Juan didn't sing lead in the first place.

Zak Waters – Bad Things – Zak mentions several times how much the song has changed. I get the sense that his feelings are mixed about the result. If he sells the song, he'll probably get over it! Hm. The neo soul version of the song is better. The verse is so busy and straightforward, when it comes, the chorus is less of a revelation. Shawn calls it "a bop." Eh.

RESULTS

The songwriters gather! Wanya calls all the songs "extremely great…they all took a major turn." Shawn thanks them for trusting the changes. The song Boyz II Men choose to record is "Love Struck." Wow. I'm surprised. But wait. THERE'S MORE. They love all the songs! They're going to record all of them! They're all winners!

You get a song! And you get a song and YOU GET A SONG. Hooray. Love Struck is the main pick, though. It gets a music video. Last season will.i.am also recorded every song presented to him.

Boyz II Men – Love Struck – The recorded version by Boyz II Men sounds completely different. The group deserves credit for staying creative and on top of trends. There are so many aging artist who get stuck in the decade they came from.

[Reality-TV-Fanatics] Simon Cowell: Coronavirus Shutdown Won’t Stop AGT Live Finals

Simon Cowell: Coronavirus Shutdown Won't Stop AGT Live Finals

05/26/2020 mj santilli America's Got Talen

For Simon Cowell and America's Got Talent, The Show Must Go On

Simon Cowell recently shared how the new season of America's Got Talent will proceed after the coronavirus pandemic shut down production.

The live shows are scheduled to air later this summer. And like American Idol and The Voice, competitions that finished their respective seasons with at home episodes, Simon is determined to air them one way or another.

"We've worked out about three different scenarios for how we can shoot the live shows with or without an audience, or a limited audience. And each one of them creatively works," Simon told People magazine. "The most important thing is that we have to ensure that since people have auditioned, that they do get the chance safely to be able to compete as they normally do, and get that chance to win a million dollars, or at least appear in the final."

Simon Cowell: There will be America's Got Talent finals, there will be a winner

Simon added: "So, we have been racking our brains, but I think that the creative solutions that we've come up with, I don't think are going to make the production or the show suffer. It definitely gives people the opportunity to do what they would normally do every year, and to make sure that we follow through on our promise that they're going to compete. There will be finals, and there will be a winner. Someone's going to walk away with a million dollars."

Ratings for The Voice and American Idol remote episodes fell sharply vs their studio counterparts. Simon probably has his fingers crossed that NBC will at least be able to film live in studio, even if its without an audience.

Innovations from "other shows" helped lead the way

Simon doesn't name names, but it appears that he watched both American Idol and The Voice for pointers on how to move forward during a pandemic.

"When you're all in the same boat, you've really, really got to use your brain now to go, 'Right, how is there a different way of doing something which still looks great, feels great, and feels as good as previous years?'" he told People. "Some of the new innovations I've already seen from other shows show me that there are different ways of producing these shows where the quality doesn't suffer, because I don't believe the future is going to be these remote shows. It's necessary at this time, but it's not the future."

Coronavirus shutdown hit before AGT finished taping auditions

Earlier this year, auditions were filmed in front of a live audience at the Pasadena Civic Center in California. But as coronavirus concerns increased, AGT was forced to eliminate the studio audiences. A few more auditions were taped before production officially shut down. In the meantime, Heidi Klum had already left set with a mysterious illness. She eventually tested negative for Covid-19.

"We started to realize that, for obvious reasons, the audience was getting smaller and smaller and smaller," Simon told People. "We had this obligation to make sure that everyone got their fair share, and was auditioned well," He added that it was "really, really important to every single person who turned up."

"So, we literally squeezed in as many, many people as we could," he said. "And as you'll see from the first episode, we found some unbelievably talented people — just fantastic people this year."

AGT accepted online submissions, began auditioning acts remotely from home

In addition to the audition episodes that were filmed, AGT accepted online submissions from acts who auditioned remotely from their homes.

Anyone who we saw on that online component now can be considered to be one of the semi-finalists or finalists," said Simon. "They're pretty much in the same position as the people who did regular auditions." Simon added, "The important thing was trying to make sure that the people we missed, as much as possible, were still given an opportunity to compete in the show."

Season 15 of America's Got Talent premieres Tonight (May 26) at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

America's Got Talent 2020 Premiere Recap and Live Blog (Video)

05/26/2020 mj santilli America's Got TalentRecaps

America's Got Talent returns to NBC tonight with Simon Cowell, Howie MandelHeidi Klum and new judge, Sofia Vergara. Heidi returns to summer AGT after a season off the panel. Terry Crews hosts. See the new acts vying for the 1 million dollar prize.

The show kicks off with a nod to the coronavirus pandemic with shots of front line workers doing their thing. But then cut to this season's new acts.

Pork Chop Revue – PERFORMING PIGS Y'ALL. The couple who run the act, adopt them right off the farm. They're goal? To be the first performing pig act on the Las Vegas strip. That's thinking big. These oinkers are pretty hilarious. And surprisingly athletic! The little one is adorable.  The piggies get a standing ovation. Deservedly so. Sofia calls it "super fun." Howie calls it unique and exciting. Heidi wants to give the pigs a kiss. She does! Sofia joins her. 4 yeses

Bad Salsa – Mumbai based Salsa dancers competed on Britain's Got Talent: The Champions. Sonali Sumanth won India's Got Talent 4, while his partner Sardar Puja was a semifinalist in seasons six and seven. "Bad" is an acronym. The female dancer is only 15. Both grew up in poverty. The couple's brand of Salsa is danced to Indian music and is full of crazy tricks. I'm not sure Len Goodman would approve? But they're fun to watch. Heidi calls it amazing. Howie says "You are the opposite of bad." Sofia calls it exciting. "You look beautiful together." Simon calls it "fantastic." 4 yeses

Broken Roots – Austin Edwards and Joey Kar are country music duo Broken Roots. They work as cops in Chicago. One of them just quit to start a music school for kids. It's the first time they ever played together. They cover "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi. They are as amateur as one might expect. Lots of gravelly screaming going on here. Howie thanks them for their service. He can't believe they haven't worked together before. Heidi loved them and the tone of their voices. Sofia calls it "beautiful." Simon wants to know if they have kids. Oh. One of them remarried after his first wife passed from cancer. Simon is drumming up some backstory realness. Because the vocals don't cut it.  4 yeses

Malik DOPE Drummer – Drummer and percussionist from Washington DC. After high school he drummed for Howard University. He's been street performing and living on the edge. He fell asleep behind the wheel one night and got into a bad accident. He promises to drum in a way they've never seen before. Malik throws his entire body in to his playing. He even moonwalks. Oop. He drops his drumstick but recovers nicely. Howie calls him an entertainer. "That was dope." Sofia wanted to get up and dance. Simon calls him "super talented." 4 yeses

Ryan Tricks – English mind reader and magician. He stars in the BBC 3 series Ryan Tricks on the Streets and Dirty Tricks, also appeared on Britain's Got Talent. Ryan invites Howie and Simon on stage to test out their "subconscious connection.." He does a trick with cards. Howie and Simon pick the same card out of separate decks. Not so impressive so far. But then the act takes a mentalist turn, and it appears as if Simon is controlling Howie's movements. The last trick, is pretty good. Howie imagines a cookie, and one appears in Simon's hand. Sofia calls it "incredible." Heidi loved it. Simon really likes him, behaving as if he's never seen him in his life! 4 yeses.

Archie Williams – Archie served 37 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, DNA evidence freed him. The Innocence project is responsible for helping to exonerate him. He stayed strong in prison through prayer and song. He watched AGT in prison, and imagined himself on stage. The guy who actually committed the murder and rape was a serial racist. Archie doesn't have a great voice or a big range, but he sings with so much emotion. He's a man who has been through to much. The judges are visibly moved. Simon says he will never forget his audition for as long as he lives.. 4 yeses

Dan Nowman Niswander – He's singing a song called "Funky Space." Total joke. He screams while wearing an alien mask. He's buzzed into oblivion. In actuality, Dan is a Bernie bro who interviews socialists on Youtube.

Old School Skaters – No. Not skateboarders who perform in a retro style. The title is literal. It's a roller skating act made up of older people. They skate to "I will Survive."  They also get buzzed into oblivion.

Michael Goldenberg – He's a former juggler turned sketch artist from Munster, Ind. Oh gosh. Sock puppets. He's not going to last two seconds. When he fakes throw up, the buzzes begin.

Double Dragon – Peruvian Twins, Andrea and Irene Ramos, were contestants (separately) on La Voz Peru and winners of the Peruvian show Divas. The two work in customer service in San Francisco. They sing "It's Raining Men" in ridiculous outfits. They can sing, but border on a joke act. It's so cheesy. This would seem silly in Branson. The audience loves it, though. Sofia calls them amazing. Fellow Latina girls! Heidi calls them "super entertaining." Howie loved them, calling them "campy and funny.." Simon loves that the girls become so emotional, one is visibly shaking – 4 yeses

Vincent Marcus – El Paso, Texas native is an impressionist and comedian and currently lives in Los Angeles. Initially, he built a following on Vine. But he only does his thing online. AGT is his first live performance. His bit is impersonating rappers performing nursery rhymes. I am pretty sure this isn't an original bit. I've seen this bit somewhere else. Hm. Still, his impersonations are good. He's confident for a dude who has never performed live before. Heidi says "You did fantastic." Sofia loved it. Howie calls him an amazing live performer. Simon thinks he has star quality. 4 yeses

Muy Moi Show – He got the Golden Buzzer on Spain's Got Talent for an act that was so gross, that I had to stop watching. He's a contortionist, danger act and sometimes lights himself on fire.. I'll be keeping my eyes closed. Y'all can tell me how it goes. "Does your mother know you do this?" asks Sofia. Heidi calls the act "scary." Simon says "It was everything." He calls him a "born entertainer." – 4 yeses

Voices of Our City Choir – Break out the tissues! It's another choir. This time, made up of homeless people in San Diego. They raise money to help the homeless to get off the streets. They sing a song the group wrote in a songwriting workshop. They have a band too. The leader sings the solos and plays guitar. An older lady who has been homeless all her life does a tone poem. This is funkier than I expected. Many musicians make up the group.     Sofia calls it "beautiful." Heidi feels the camaraderie and togetherness of the group. "There is strength in numbers," says Simon. So, unsurprisingly, Terry hits his Golden Buzzer. He chose a choir from Detroit last year. It's his thing! The tone poem lady is so happy, she falls to the floor.

[Reality-TV-Fanatics] World of Dance 4 Premiere Recap and Live Blog (VIDEO)

Hey All :)

We are back! World Of Dance returns for an epic fourth season and it all starts tonight. I am happy to see you guys and I hope everyone is remaining safe and healthy through these crazy times. A little entertainment is something we can all use to pass the time. So, let's be entertained by some phenomenal dancing.

Season four brings some new changes to the format of WOD and that starts right at the beginning with a revamped qualifier round. The contestants will think they are performing for producers of the show before seeing the judges. However, our esteemed panel consisting of Jennifer LopezNE-YO, and Derek Hough will surprise them in a stripped down warehouse where they will decide right then and there who makes it to the next round!

Another big change is that the judges will introduce the callback vote, in which they can vote yes to an act, no to an act, or tell them they earned a callback (where they can perform again for a shot at advancing). There is also some cool new changes to the later rounds but we will talk about that when we arrive there. For tonight, it is all about the qualifiers.

Will this be the fourth season in a row where a hip-hop act wins the million dollars? Will we see some returning favorites, perhaps incorporated into new groups? And of course, how many times will Jennifer get the "goosies?" Here we go…

Jennifer wants the contestants to earn their way onto the big stage, so that's why these auditions are happening in a warehouse. The contestants think they are auditioning for the producers. Scott Evans (our host) is on hand.

First up tonight is Jefferson & Adrianita, a salsa duo in the upper division. They are a couple but have been dancing for seventeen years. They have won competitions around the world. They named their son Derek, after….yes, Derek Hough. They are a little shocked to see the judges, to say the least. DAMN. Now, we know why they are champs. That was incredible. So fast, so intricate, with so many deliciously tricky steps and they never missed a beat.

Ne-Yo calls it slick and tight. Jennifer compares them to previous contestants who didn't win and says they need a little improvement (faster footwork). Derek loved the tricks and found them surprising. He notes that the surprises need to be maintained. Derek gets up to dance with Adrianita and Jennifer gets up to dance with Jefferson. A dance-off between the "couples." Ne-Yo will not declare a winner. They need (2) YES votes to go to the duels. Ne-Yo says YES. Derek says YES. Jennifer says YES. THEY GO TO THE DUELS.

Next up tonight is GRVMNT, a hip-hop crew from Canada with the junior division. They express themselves as high energy and sharp. One is the trickster who just goes for anything on the floor. They are all family (not related) and when one's father passed away, they all came together for him. He dances now as though his dad is watching. They are literally all crying at the experience of doing this. Wait till they see the judges. SURPRISE. They can't believe it. They are very cool. Love the formations here. It is nothing we haven't seen before from other hip-hop crews but they definitely have an entertaining way. I appreciate the attention to detail as I was watching- it looked like everyone was in step with one another. A couple of cool moves thrown in and a very solid audition.

Derek says it was well rehearsed. He felt his energy dip in the middle. Ne-Yo thought they did well. It was super clean and strong but he didn't like the groove moment during the dance. He doesn't want to see the transitions coming. Jennifer says they have encouraging things but they need to be at another level. Jennifer says YES. Ne-Yo says CALLBACK (they get another opportunity). Derek's vote is a CALLBACK also. So, this crew will be back to dance BEFORE the duels to see if they can improve. That was a tough critique but I can't say I disagree. A lot of that was familiar and they need to bring it up a notch.

Next is Jake & Chau. Jake looks nauseous seeing the judges and realizing they are auditioning for them right now. They are contemporary dancers with the upper division. They met at a dance convention. They have good communication and trust. Very good contemporary piece. She's a wee bit better than he is and he had one or two moments during that which looked sloppy. But they do great partner work and they tell a nice story within the time of the dance.

Derek calls it beautiful and stunning. He loved the connected choreography. Ne-Yo enjoyed the chemistry and trust. Jennifer says they are looking for something new and something that makes them feel and she thinks they are special. Derek notes they should tap a little bit more into the emotional part. Ne-Yo says YES. Jennifer says YES. Derek says YES. They make it to the DUELS.

We continue tonight with The Williams Fam. They represent hip-hop in the upper division. They are social media influencers (because of course). They are going to translate what they do on social media to a stage. They are actual brothers and very close in age. They played it cool being in front of the judges and being surprised. Okay, they are funny and decent. But nothing special. If the earlier group had to get callback, I hope these guys do as well. Actually, I would vote NO if I was a judge. It wasn't anything special. Maybe on another talent show or at some school event, it would be the highlight
. But with these dancers, it was just alright. They bring humor to the steps though, which is a plus..
Derek appreciated the charisma. For Derek, it didn't mean the high level. Ne-Yo would love watching it on his phone but here, for a million dollars, it was not competition worthy. Jennifer wanted it cleaner and tighter. Jennifer says NO. Ne-Yo also says NO. Derek says NO. They do not make it to the duels.. Derek heads backstage to do a social media routine with them to make them feel better. Aw, that was sweet. But letting them go was the correct choice.

Up next are Bailey & Kida, a hip-hop duo in the junior division. This is another pair with a huge social media following. They have appeared on Ellen and have both danced with some incredible names (including Janet Jackson and Jason Derulo). They definitely have a presence in the business. It has only been a few weeks that they have been a duo. Unreal. So good. Best of the night thus far. The dynamite is that even though they are a duo, each had a signature way about them that makes you want to watch them individually and together. The popping and locking was great and they are also really good storytellers within the dance. I understand now why so many artists ask them to dance.

Jennifer tells them they are great performers. But she can tell they haven't been dancing together for a long time. Derek agrees and thinks the "vibing" will come with time. Ne-Yo loved the isolations. Ne-Yo is impressed and says YES. Derek says YES. Jennifer agrees and they go straight to the duels. They better have gotten three yes

Savannah Manzel is next, a jazz dancer with the junior division. The show has been using this girl in promotional commercials for the show so she should be fantastic. They have highlighted her a lot. She fell in love with dance as a kid. Heck, she is still a kid. She's NINE. LOL. She makes friendship bracelets and made some for everyone in the waiting room. Her mom tells her she is dancing in front of producers. SHOCKER. No, you are not. She is excited and doesn't seem at all intimidated by the judges being there. She's adorable and a little firecracker out there. I am always weary of kids being in competition shows for a variety of obvious reasons. But she has the stuff. Very nice steps. She needs to work on connecting more to the music and telling a story but that's the job for her choreographers to teach clearly. I am on the fence about whether she should be on a show where she could potentially be devastated by not winning but her mom seems like a good support system.

Jennifer says she looks like she was rehearsing for that for years. She calls her a pretty amazing dancer that is strong and athletic. Derek wants to call his nieces to step it up because Savannah was here. Ne-Yo has no words and her still level is above her years. All the judges say yes and Savannah is on her way to the duels. She is the youngest soloist the show has had.

And with that, the premiere comes to a close. I am so happy this show is back. I hope you all had fun watching with me and were entertained.. The qualifiers continue next Tuesday with more auditions as hopefuls are shocked to see the judges in front of them. Join me in a week. Have a safe week everyone. Be strong and love one another.
