Re: [BigBrother_Survivor] Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders series premiere recap: 'Episode 1'

I watched last night and will be watching all the episodes. With Edie Falco playing the attorney I think Dick Wolf has a hit on his hands. Of course it opens with the murders and it will be at least a few episodes before the brothers are arrested. But I can see where the show will build up to the courtroom scenes and I could see Edie winning awards for this role!

& Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders series
premiere recap: 'Episode 1'What
could possibly go wrong?Maureen Lee Lenker•@themaureenleePosted on September 26, 2017 at 11:00pm
EDT
Before
there was O.J., the Menendez murders were the high-profile
case that took the world by storm — made all the more
tantalizing for its connections to Hollywood and the sunny,
idyllic streets of Beverly Hills. There's something
particularly tantalizing about true-crime stories from Los
Angeles: the dichotomy between sunshine and noir, outward
perfection masking dark secrets. When Mary "Kitty"
Menendez and Jose Menendez were murdered in their
high-security Beverly Hills mansion and the top suspects
ended up being their sons, it captured the attention of the
nation.Now,
the ins and outs of this 28-year-old case have become the
fodder for the latest entry in Dick Wolf's television
empire — and the first Law
& Order to employ the miniseries format.
The procedural franchise has often looked to
ripped-from-the-headlines stories, but with Law
& Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders, they're
moving from thinly veiled stand-ins to the real figures,
digging into the psychology of the players — the
murderers, the detectives, the lawyers, and the
psychiatrists.Let's
take a look at what went down in the first hour of this
eight-hour miniseries.The
Murders and the Investigation "Guns,
pills, and money – what could possibly go wrong
here?"—Detective ZoellerRather
than open with Law
& Order's signature "dun-dun," we begin with
eerie, low music and a silent film-style murder — the
horrified faces of Kitty and Jose Menendez (Lolita
Davidovich, Carlos Gómez) and the smoking muzzle of a
shotgun. The murders themselves are suitably gruesome but
still appropriate for a broadcast network (and for that I
thank this show).Detective
Les Zoeller (Sam Jaeger) winds his way through Beverly Hills
in the dark (early in the morning of Aug. 21, 1989,
according to the signature Law
& Order timecard) as we hear Lyle Menendez's now
infamous 911 call play over the scene. "Someone killed my
parents" he sobs, barely intelligible.As
the police question Lyle (Miles Gaston Villanueva) and
brother Erik (Gus Halper), we learn their father was the CEO
of a movie company that may have had seedy ties to the mob
and Kitty struggled with suicidal thoughts and
depression.Zoeller
continues his investigation of the crime scene — and
possibly compromises it by allowing the brothers to reenter
their home and get their gear for tennis practice. Yes,
their parents were just murdered, but they cannot miss their
serve time. In the house, Zoeller finds a litany of ominous
items: 22-caliber shotguns, pills for anxiety and sleep
disorders, AND FERRETS (dun-dun).Detective
Zoeller questions Mr. Menendez's former coworkers, who
reveal that the family relocated to Beverly Hills from
Calabasas after Erik broke into a neighbor's house. (Here,
after 13 full minutes, we finally hear that "dun-dun"
— the suspense of wondering when or if it might show up
was killing me.) Deputy District Attorney Pam Bozanich
(Elizabeth Reaser) suggests ties to a "gang-banger" from
the family's days in the valley, and Zoeller retorts with
a line that perfectly captures why the Menendez murders
fascinated the nation: "It's gotta be the bangers or the
mob or Charlie Manson, always an outsider, because nobody
bad lives in Beverly Hills."But
it's looking increasingly likely that the Menendez
brothers might be suspects. The investigators talk to friend
and former tennis coach Perry, whom Lyle and Erik claimed
they were supposed to meet the night of the murders. Perry
reveals it was the boys who never showed up for their
arranged meeting and tells the detectives that Lyle was
suspended from Princeton for plagiarism. Even worse, in a
plot twist that you would not believe if this weren't
based on a true story, Erik wrote a screenplay with former
high school classmate Craig in which the main character
kills his rich parents — and it was all Erik's
idea.The
last piece in the puzzle before the detectives officially
name Lyle and Erik as suspects is the missing Menendez will.
The family has been unable to find a recent, official copy
of a will outlining the inheritance of their sizable estate.
Jose's sister Marta (Constance Marie) and his
brother-in-law Carlos (Alejandro Furth) both reveal that
Jose had threatened to cut Lyle and Erik out of the will
altogether out of anger that they were cruising through life
waiting for their inheritance. This version of the will was
never found, but Uncle Carlos found a computer file named
"Will" he could not open, which was later wiped from the
hard drive.The
Menendez brothers are now officially suspects. Lyle
and Erik We
also get more of a glimpse into the minds and lives of Erik
and Lyle Menendez — and the radically different ways they
react to the murder of their parents. Of course, hindsight
is 20/20, so it's hard not to see the boys through the
lens of the knowledge that they will be found guilty, and
the show leans into that.Erik
is the curly-haired younger brother who sobs his way through
his police interrogation, his parents' funeral, and more
— his relatives worry about him as he spends his days
curled in the fetal position in the corner of his room. Lyle
is the cool, collected brother with the quiet grin and
(suspicious) bowl cut. In interrogation, they explain how
they went to the movies and came home to find the house full
of gun smoke and their parents' dead bodies.Lyle
quickly takes charge, renting rooms at the Hotel Bel-Air for
the family, buying Armani suits and diamond-encrusted
watches to wear to the funeral, and investing in fancy cars
and restaurants he intends to convert into a chain of
hot-wing joints near college campuses. He tells family
members their allowance was $180 a month (equal to about
$360 today), so they turn over his father's company card,
which sends him on a spending spree that in no way makes him
look like he might have killed his parents for his
inheritance. Not suspicious at all, Lyle.In
contrast, Erik is quiet and withdrawn, rejecting his
brother's urging that he buy an expensive watch and suit.
The episode concludes with him returning to the family home
and having a breakdown in the living room, where he flashes
back to the room as it looked as a blood-spattered crime
scene.This
episode makes heavy use of black-and-white flashbacks to
give us a window into what might have motivated the murders.
In Lyle's case, we see him arguing with his dad over
paying for a trip to Europe to visit his girlfriend Jamie,
who will be on a tennis tour overseas. Jose believes Jamie
is a gold digger, and he paid for her sponsorship to get her
away from Lyle. We also see Jamie in the present day,
comforting the brothers and questioning Lyle about his
inability to manage his money.Erik's
flashbacks show us a glimpse of his mother before the
murders. She is catatonic and crying in bed as he tries to
cajole her into coming to watch his tennis practice,
assuring her the whole family loves her.Uncle
Carlos remembers the night Jose told him he was going to cut
his sons out of the will – Jose calls the girls his sons
are dating "sluts" and insists they will "have to get
by on their own initiative."Finally,
we see Lyle asking the computer tech to erase the files for
the new will from the computer, telling the guy that he
plans to sell the computer, so he needs it to look as if the
files were never there.Leslie
AbramsonAbramson
(Edie Falco), the notoriously intense and sometimes
ethically questionable defense lawyer for the Menendez
brothers, has been billed as the show's top hook, with
Falco's image dominating marketing for the series — in a
wig that seems to operate on the theory that a terrible perm
won Sarah Paulson an Emmy, so this should do the
trick.Though
it will be some time before Abramson is directly involved in
the case, we get glimpses of her here. We're introduced to
Abramson while she is defending a boy against murder for
killing his abusive father. She argues that he should only
be charged with manslaughter lest the conviction be "his
father's last act of terror, with you as his
accomplice." We're meant to see Abramson as a forceful
defense lawyer — from her stirring closing remarks to her
threats to knee a reporter in the crotch. It's
less-than-subtle foreshadowing of the same defense case she
will build for the Menendez brothers.Other
than that, we see her talking to the Menendez family lawyer
in court and postulating that the boys are the true killers.
At a dinner party, people remark on how this is even more
shocking than the murder of Sharon Tate, and Abramson
ominously rebuts, "There's only one thing that can
generate that level of anger — family."Dr.
Jerome OzielDr.
Jerome Oziel (Josh Charles, moving from The
Good Wife to The Bad Wig) is Erik's
court-mandated psychiatrist following the incidents in
Calabasas. We briefly meet Dr. Oziel at the family
gathering, and we see him again in his office taking a phone
call from Erik's uncle, who is concerned about his
nephew's wellbeing and worries Erik may be a suicide
risk.We
also meet Judalon Smyth (Heather Graham), an underwritten
cast-off from a soap opera plot. Smyth, Oziel's mistress,
refers to him by the cringe-worthy name "Dr. Daddy."
(The writers wouldn't include such a ludicrous name if it
weren't a real-life detail…would they?) She pressures
Oziel about leaving his wife — a point of conflict that
will have major repercussions in the case. And there we have it. The boys are officially
suspects. Will we see an arrest next week? We can only
assume — the case took seven years and three juries before
a final conviction, and we only get eight hours of
television to tell this story.

he does seem to be getting a bit better.I really dont have a fav so far.

'Dancing
with the Stars' Recap: Latin Night and the Second
Elimination
Tuesday,
September 26, 2017
John Kubicek
Senior
Writer, BuddyTV
The two-night second week of Dancing
with the Stars season 25 started out classy and elegant
with Ballroom Night. But now it's time to get sexy with
Latin Night. The 12 remaining couples will perform their
second routines of the week and someone else will be
eliminated.

Monday's
elimination of Barbara Corcoran was an obvious choice, but
with Nick Lachey and Derek Fisher tied at the bottom of the
leaderboard, and five other stars within two points of them,
it could be a dramatic and shocking result.

LIVE...from
Hollywood...this is my Dancing
with the Stars live blog.

Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev: Samba

Nikki
giggles over being so close to a man who's not John
Cena. The night of sexiness starts off strong with very
little clothing. She's got some decent hip action, but
she moves a little slowly. Len Goodman didn't like the
gyrating at the start and calls it just OK. The judges agree
that her timing and legs were a bit off.

Judges'
Scores 6+6+6=18

That's
their worst score yet.

Victoria Arlen and Val Chmerkovskiy: Rumba

Playing
the romance of the Rumba is hard for her. The routine is
quaint and tender, but it feels very empty with a long
build-up and emphasis on the story over content. Bruno
Tonioli says it was more Contemporary and lacked hip action.
Len points out that there was nothing recognizable from the
Rumba. Val responds that times have changed, but Len comes
back that they either need to fire him or Val needs to
accept that Len's idea of a Rumba is what matters.
I'm Team Len all the way, especially because ignoring
the style and doing whatever he wants has become a trend
with Val.

Judges'
Scores: 7+6+7=20

It's
Victoria's birthday and they make a huge deal out of it,
with a cake and a song.

Derek Fisher and Sharna Burgess: Paso Doble

He's
a naturally nice guy, so it's hard for him to be a tough
matador. That shows in the routine as he lacks the intensity
and doesn't hit every single move as hard as he could.
Carrie Ann likes that he's improving, but the judges
still have problems with some of his arm and hand
movements.

Judges'
Scores: 7+6+6=19

Meh,
he's slipping to the bottom very quickly.

Sasha Pieterse and Gleb Savchenko: Samba

The
routine has a prom theme and she opens up about gaining 70
pounds over two years because of a hormone imbalance, but
she's already lost 15 pounds doing this show. I've
been hard on her thus far, but I enjoyed this dance a lot.
She's a tad curvier than some of the women on the show
and she knows how to use it in all the right ways. The
judges like her sparkle and bounce.

Judges'
Scores: 8+7+7=22

The
judges are being stingy with the 8s this year, so this is
pretty good.

Nick Lachey and Peta Murgatroyd: Argentine Tango

There's
a hilarious segment where Vanessa recalls their first date
but Nick doesn't remember it at all. The choreography is
good, but once again Nick is too stiff. I'm ready to
call it, he's just not a very good dancer. Bruno gives
him credit for trying to get into character, which is as
weak a compliment as he can muster. Len goes in hard that he
lacked the intensity. The judges all agree that he's
pretty bad.

Judges'
Scores: 7+6+6=19

Nick
is going to have to rely on a big fan base of 98 Degrees
fans, because he won't last much longer with these
scores.

Jordan Fisher and Lindsay Arnold: Samba

Lindsay
admits that this is one of the hardest styles and she
usually tries to avoid it, but Jordan is up to the
challenge. Once again he makes it look easy, crushing it
with a fast, passionate and fun dance. His legs are amazing,
but I suppose I could use a bit more hip movement. Carrie
Ann loved the Latin nuances and Len warns him to practice
with his performance shoes, not tennis sneakers.

Judges'
Scores: 8+8+8=24

He
might end up on top of the leaderboard for a third night in
a row.

Drew Scott and Emma Slater: Rumba

He's
pale and got a spray tan/ This guy reminds me a lot of
Zachary Levi in Chuck.
The dance is sensual with great silhouettes. In just three
nights, he's improving a whole lot. Len calls it his
best dance yet. Carrie Ann says he didn't come in as the
best dancer and Bruno falls off his chair.

Judges'
Scores: 7+7+7=21

His
scores get better with every routine.

Debbie Gibson and Alan Bersten: Argentine Tango

They
want to show off her naughty side and they succeed with a
steamy routine that looks great, filled with passion and
intensity. The judges love her attitude, but not the feet.
I'm primarily disappointed that Alan didn't get a
style for Latin Night where he could take his shirt off.

Judges'
Scores: 7+7+7=21

Like
Drew, she's improved with every dance.

Vanessa Lachey and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: Salsa

The
hot mama is trying to relive her 20s when she worked for MTV
and went out dancing with her girlfriends. That younger
Vanessa definitely shows, but there's a lot of content
and it might be a tad too fast for her. The judges love it,
despite a tiny incident, and Len calls her a real contender
for the Mirror Ball.

Judges'
Scores: 8+8+7=23

I
hope Nick goes home soon, because I'm worried he may be
taking votes away from Vanessa and I want her in the
finale.

Terrell Owens and Cheryl Burke: Samba

T.O.
is single and goes home alone, watching Property
Brothers. He thinks he's sexily handsome. He plays a
fireman and the whole thing feels a little goofy. They were
actually sexier last night for their ballroom dance. Bruno
thinks he needs more bounce in his legs and Carrie Ann is
still underwhelmed.

Judges'
Scores: 6+6+7=19

He's
definitely going to be in danger soon, if not tonight.

Lindsey Stirling and Mark Ballas: Salsa

She
comes from a farm family and has a strong work ethic, even
when it comes to hip action. The dance is flirty and fun, a
reminder of how great she was in week 1. The beginning is
the best, but it stays energetic the whole time. Carrie Ann
loves that she becomes the music and Len loves the full-on
content without any long introduction.

Judges'
Scores: 8+8+8=24

Like
last week, she's back to being tied with Jordan at the
top. Hopefully last night was an anomaly.

Frankie Muniz and Witney Carson: Cha-Cha-Cha

Frankie
is extremely dedicated to the show, exercising, doing yoga
and cryo-therapy. Wow, he has a shocking amount of swagger
and absolutely kills it. He could work a bit on the
transitions, but it's fantastic. The judges are equally
shocked and delighted.

Judges'
Scores: 8+8+9=25

Holy
crap, the first 9 of the season. Wow, after three nights,
five different couples have been on top of the
leaderboard.

THE
RESULTS

With
a very close leaderboard last night (seven couples had 19 to
21 points), anything is possible.

The
first couple IN JEOPARDY is...Nick and Peta
The
second couple IN JEOPARDY is...Debbie and Alan

I'm
not shocked by either of those.

Debbie Gibson and Alan Bersten ARE ELIMINATED!

Despite
a tight leaderboard, I predicted another one correctly.
Sorry Alan, this was a tough first time as a pro. But she
did an impressive job and is much better than most second
eliminated contestants.

THE
LEADERBOARD

25:
Frankie Muniz
24:
Jordan Fisher , Lindsey Stirling
23:
Vanessa Lachey
22:
Sasha Pieterse
21:
Drew Scott
20:
Victoria Arlen
19:
Derek Fisher , Nick Lachey . Terrell Owens
18:

Re: [BigBrother_Survivor] 'The Voice' Recap: Blake and Miley Battle to Get Country Singers on Their Teams

I would say Ashland was the first stand out in the blinds so far. I expect she'll make it through Knockouts and Battles and I know Blake will try and steal her
the first chance he gets!

  'The
Voice' Recap: Blake and Miley Battle to Get Country
Singers on Their Teams
Tuesday,
September 26, 2017
Laura Tucker
Contributing
Writer, BuddyTV
It was evident watching the season 13 premiere of The
Voice that this is going to be a great season.
We've moved away from the cutesy-ness of Blake Shelton
and Gwen Stefani , and now it's just all great music, as
he's joined by fellow coaches Miley Cyrus, Adam Levine
and new coach Jennifer Hudson.

Jennifer, previously a winning coach on the UK version of The
Voice, just couldn't help coaching the contestants
even during the audition stage, though it didn't always
win them over. It's not going to help her much during
night two, however, as many of the contestants fit into the
country genre.

Keisha Renee ("I Can't Stop Loving
You")

Keisha, 30, of Inglewood, California, believes that it's
good that the coaches can't see her because she wants to
break the mold of what a country artist should look like.
Gospel music is in her genes, but she's become open to
all genres. Though she previously sang background for Nicki
Minaj, she also loves country music. Previously really heavy
during a high-risk pregnancy with her daughter, she has now
lost the weight.
She definitely tackles the country genre really
well and gets chair turns from all four coaches, as Jennifer
says, "Sing, girl!" She asks what church Keisha
goes to, as she knows she's hearing church in that
voice. She also wonders what her true focus is, wanting to
help her create her own lane. Adam figures he's in
trouble because she's singing something Blake would do
with Jennifer's voice and Miley's style. Miley
explains that Nashville is thriving right now because
they're putting a new face to the music. Blake boasts
that country music is his life, which is probably the reason
she picks him as her coach.Result:
Keisha joins Blake's team

Dylan Gerard ("Say You Won't Let
Go")

This
28-year-old nurse's assistant of Macclenny, Florida,
while he looks very unstated, gives a terrific emotional
performance. Just before the chorus, Adam and Jennifer turn
their chairs, followed by a standing ovation fromAdam, who
explains that he was able to feel something and that's
why he turned around. Jennifer sees potential in him and
thinks he has more than he even realizes he has and does yet
more quick coaching, leading to a performance that Miley
calls "dope." This spells trouble for Adam, but
surprisingly Dylan goes with Adam because he's a fan of
Maroon 5. Result:
Dylan joins Adam's team
Maharasyi
("Tell Me Something Good")

Maharasyi gets subtitles, as she starts by speaking in
Indonesian. Her entire family is from Indonesia, but she was
born in Los Angeles. Shet went to Indonesia to be raised
after her father left the family because her mother was
having a hard time raising a family and working two jobs.
The 27-year-old fell in love with music watching her aunt,
who is "like the Whitney Houston of Indonesia."
Maharasyi recorded there as well but came back to the US to
be with her family. She's looking to be coached by the
talented Miley.

But
she's not like the Indonesian Whitney Houston; she's
more like a soulful Jennifer Hudson, who turns around when
she obviously hears the same quality. Maharasyi then gets
her wish when Miley turns around as well. Adam is happy that
she chose the song as "Chaka Khan is, like, my
crush." Jennifer wonders why she shied away away from
the end note because she thinks she had it. She obliges
Jennifer and hits it. Miley felt her nerves were holding her
back and wants her to believe in herself as much as she
does. Maharasyi switches her plans and goes with Jennifer as
her coach.
Result:
Maharasyi joins Jennifer's team

Marlow
Wells ("Love Me Now")

The
61-year-old Marlow is from Fontana, California, but he is
originally from Detroit. His dad, Carl Jones, sang with the
Love-Tones along with many of the Motown greats such as
Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. After 30 years of success
at a major insurance company, he missed music and has been
singing full-time the past five years. His wife is working
two jobs for him to realize his dream. Another dream would
be to work with Jennifer.

Despite having that Motown background, he sings this more
recent song and does well, but he's perhaps not singing
in the genre he's more comfortable with. No one turns
around for him. Adam tells him he has a powerful, strong
voice, but he missed some of the original phrasing. Jennifer
explains that his voice just covered so many genres. Miley
thinks she might have turned had she not gotten into her own
head and questioned why the others weren't turning
around.
Result:
No one turns their chairs

Red
Marlow ("Swingin'")

Red Marlow, 40, of Dickson, Tennessee, is bald now but
explains that he used to have so much red hair he could set
stuff on fire. He could be a great one for Miley, as he
says, "I'm country as cornbread, from singing to
skeet shooting, fishing, hunting." He grew up playing
bluegrass and gospel, as his dad's a preacher. He moved
on to singing demos when he first started out in music but
took a step back as a family man and now runs a small
construction business. He's hoping to turn a chair to
know that he is good enough to do this.

Singing up onstage along with his guitar, it's obvious
that he's "country as cornbread." Blake sings
along and finally hits his button, followed by Miley. Adam
loves seeing someone who is more country than Blake. MIley
tells him she's here this season because she wants to
bring a new face to country music. Red explains that
he's actually met Blake before, and he'd just love
to see him get the opportunity that he deserves. Red says he
has to pick Blake.
Result:
Red joins Blake's team

Ashland Craft ("You Are My
Sunshine")

This
21-year-old from Piedmont, South Carolina, has had a steady
gig at what she describes as a "honky tonk." Her
dad is a mechanic and built her a studio. She explains there
aren't a lot of music opportunities where she's
from, so she sees this as her one chance to reach her dream.

She
sings in the style of Chris Stapleton, and she absolutely
kills it with perhaps the most unique performance of the
night. Miley, Adam and Blake turn their chairs, and Miley is
already chomping at the bit to win this performance. She
says she covered that song on her tour and even sang it
dressed as the sun. Adam has been trying to get a country
artist throughout the series but believes she'll
transcend this genre. Blake tells her there hasn't been
a voice like hers on country radio since Gretchen Wilson.
Ashland admits to being torn, then goes with
Miley.

Result:
Ashland joins Miley's team

There definitely seems to be a preponderance of country
singers on this second night of the Blind
Auditions.

Will The
Voice be able to break out of the country genre in the
remainder of the auditions? Or is this setting the tone for
season 13? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section
below.
