Songland 2019 Recap: Charlie Puth – Live Blog (VIDEO)

09/04/2019 mj santilli
The new music competition Songland continues on NBC tonight (Sept 4). Songwriters compete to have their tune recorded by that week's mega-artist. Songwriter/producers Ryan Tedder, Shane McAnally and Ester Dean are on hand to help the contestants bring their ideas to life.

Songland: Sam DeRosa Sings "Pill For This" for Charlie Puth (VIDEO)

Here's a fun fact. Tonight's episode with hitmaker Charlie Puth is the Songland pilot. In other words, "Charlie Puth" was taped first, and before producers knew whether NBC would pick the show up or not. Now, it's the penultimate episode. Next week, Songland season 1 ends with Ryan Tedder's band, One Republic.

Apparently, Charlie is a "piano prodigy." He's looking for a song with emotional lyrics, and melodies that make people want to dance. That's an interesting juxtaposition.

Sam DeRosa – Pill for This – She's from Poughkeepsie New York. Sam graduated from Berklee with a degree in songwriting. She wrote the song after finding out her ex and ex friend were getting married, and at the time she could barely endure. It turns out she and Charlie attended Berklee at same time. They know each other! The song is giving Ryan GOOSIES. The panel gives her a mini ovation. Ester declares that the song belongs on the radio right now. The hook is stuck in Ryan's head. He wouldn't change a thing. Shane wants to strip off all the tricks. Ester wants a duet–Sam and Charlie sing a bit of the song together while Ryan plays the keys.

Zach Sorgen – Habit – From Berkley, California, he was born in 1990 but has always loved 80s music. He began writing songs in his teens and had been writing a song a day for the last five or six years. He also studied classical music, and thought he would score movies. The song has a cool jazzy vibe. His voice is pretty limited. But he's a songwriter, right? Ryan calls it a "giant box of ear candy." He likes the Bossa Nova vibe. Shane would work on the "convoluted" lyric. Ester fiddles with a drum machine, adding some "heartbeats" which Ryan feels adds "swag" to the song. He declares it a "smash." The song makes Charlie excited.

Paris Williams – Pity Party – This 19 year old's mom says she could hum before she talked. The song is about someone feeling bad after messing up a relationship. Paris is from Jersey, but lives in Seattle now. The song has a really nice groove. It's so smooth, with a bit of a retro soul vibe. NICE. So far, this song is my favorite. Ryan actually jumps up to hug her. "That melody was a 10," comparing the hook to something Prince would write. The lyric took Shane to a country place. Charlie adds some Hall & Oats realness on the piano. This is VERY nice! Charlie isn't sure about the jazzy, Scotty parts of the song. Ester would strip it all down and customize it for Charlie. Oh no. They'll ruin it. Hm.

Joel Adams – Hate Love – The 21 year old is from Brisbane Australia. He moved to the States after he graduated school. He came out of a rough relationship, and…he made hate love? I'm a little confused by his explanation. Oh. It's about makeup sex. 'It's time we make some of that hate love," goes the lyric. This seems like the kind of thing Charlie would sing. Shane doesn't care for using "hate" as a hook, but he likes the melody. The group tinkers with the lyric. It's true, the lyric is a little s & m icky. Charlie wants to make it playful, but with hard percussion.

Results: Zach Sorgen, Joel Adams and Sam DeRosa move on. Paris Williams is eliminated. And that's a good thing. A pity party would have been in order if the group ripped her wonderful song apart just to suit Charlie. He would have needed to completely rewrite the lyrics, and he didn't want to do that. He confesses that he likes "Hate Love" as a title, but wants to add some softness.

Ryan and Zach collaborate. Ryan wants to process the guitar as if it were a James Taylor sample. The whole idea is about making the song more hip and edgy. Ester works with Joel. She wants to work on the lyrics. She's not a fan of "hate love." Shane and Sam join forces. Shane keeps a piano base, transforming the song into a ballad. Ryan and Zach work on "bringing the swag." The chorus has to be "mean" Ryan says. Charlie will pass on it otherwise. Ester wants to transform the song into a dance track, but Joel isn't digging that. Ohhhh. Disagreement! He seems reluctant, but still allows her to turn the song into an EDM track.

Sam DeRosa – Pill For This – The song isn't exactly a ballad, but  the final version is moody and atmospheric. Slowing down the beat allows the song's pain to emerge. Shane made some smart decisions here. Charlie calls it "angsty." and compliments her singing. Zach Sorgen – Bad Habit – Zach thinks the final version is less risky. I'm not sure I'd call this edgy, actually. But then, what would Ryan Tedder know about edge, right? The song has a nice vibe. I don't love what he did on the chorus. That weird rhyming scheme with the ba-ba-ba vocal is not doing it for me.

Joel Adams – Hate Love – He's still unsure about the direction Ester took the song. But he's willing to trust the "experts" here. It's not a bad song, though. "I don't want to be the fool that makes you hate love," That little twist on the lyrics serves to soften them up, making them palatable.. "I did not see that coming," says Ryan. Charlie liked the way she flipped the lyrics.

Results: Charlie becomes legit emotional as he reveals his decision. He calls the experience "humbling." All his life, people wondered why he didn't have a "real" job. He knows what they're going through as aspiring songwriters. Oh. Labels told him his songs were "corny" (Narrator: They are).

Charlie chooses Zach Sorgen's "Bad Habit." He feels the song is different for him, but still in his lane. It's a reasonable choice for him.

America's Got Talent Recap 09/04/19: Season 14 Episode 18 "Live Results 4"

BY Kristine Francis on September 4, 2019

Tonight on NBC America's Got Talent begins with an all-new Wednesday, September 4, 2019, episode and we have your America's Got Talent recap below! On tonight's AGT season 14 episode 18 "Live Results 4″, as per the NBC synopsis, "Five of the previous night's performers move on to the Finals. Viewers have one last chance to send their favorite performer to the next round by participating in the Dunkin' Save."

Make sure to bookmark this spot and come back later for our America's Got Talent recap from 8 PM – 9 PM ET! Refresh often so you get the most current info! While you wait for the episode head over and check out all our AGT spoilers, news, recaps & more!

Tonight's America's Got Talent recap begins now – Refresh Page often to get the most current updates!

The Finals is in two weeks! Tonight, was one of the last few episodes before then and it also revealed who was going through to the Finals because tonight were the live results. The results were all from last night's performances. There was no going back and having a redo. The results were final, but they did take quite a few people by surprise. The three acts in the bottom were Light Balance Kids, Ndlovu Youth Choir, and Robert Finley. All three acts had been phenomenal last night. The audience enjoyed and even the judges loved them.

But no one is ever truly secure on AGT. They needed their fanbase to come out and vote for them. Those same fans still have time to vote. They can vote in the Dunkin Save and save one of the three. It didn't seem fair that only one of them could go through, but that's the way it is and thankfully no one was too heartbroken. The kids and the rest of the contestants all had a great time behind the scenes. They got to party in the Dunkin Lounge and the results were being played out as they were doing so.

The first pairing to battle it out was Kodie Lee and Greg Morton. Morton had an off night yesterday and that must come back to haunt him now that he knows America saved Kodi. It must also hurt how it didn't come as a surprise. Kodi was a hit with everyone and they were shouting his name as the results were being revealed. So, that probably served as a giant hint. Everyone, though, remained in good humor and they have several reasons to enjoy tonight. The show had live performances from Darci Lynne and Preacher.

The two battled out for the championship, twice in fact. Now, they were here for a different reason. Darci Lynne was a comedic ventriloquist and she always leaves the crowd in stitches, but she had some help tonight from Preacher Lawson. He was another comedian. He too had the audience laughing and so this visit from AGT Alumni was just what the crowd needed. They even later heard from Jon Dorenbos. He was off doing magic at football practice and it's great to see him combined these two things as only he can.

The guest stars also helped the contestants with their nerves. They've been there themselves and so they let everyone know its okay if they feel like they were going to be sick. It was all part of the process. It also helped take up the time, now back to the results. The next group had Benicio Bryant, Eric Chien, and Ansley Burns. Two of the three weren't that great yesterday. Eric took his once exciting routine and thought making it boring would mean it was interesting. It wasn't. Then there was Ashley who sadly didn't pick the right song for her voice.

The song she chose had highlighted her flaws. Meanwhile, Benicio was the only one of the three that had several great nights in a row and the audience felt he was a better bet because of it. America saved Benicio and eliminated Eric and Ansley. There was also the last group before the Dunkin Save. That group had Massoudi Brother, Tyler Butler-Figueroa, and Jackie Fabulous. This group was a little bit harder because two of the three were actually great. The only that did have an off night was Jackie Fabulous.

Not everyone was in agreement about it, but those were the facts and so her position was sort of a given. The real tossup was between the brothers and Tyler. They were both great acts and they have completely two different fanbases. It literally could have gone either way. So, when it came down to the fanbases, it was Tyler's that was the stronger one. America voted to save Tyler and he will be going to the Finals.

Now, onto the Dunkin Save. America chose to save Light Balance Kids. But the judges were still left with the choice between the Ndlovu Youth Choir and Robert Finley. They all loved Robert and they wished nothing but the best for him and yet the majority loved the youth choir.

Ndlovu Youth Choir had the best night of their career yesterday and that needed to be celebrated.

THE END!

Jessica thought she and Jackson had a great personal and game relationship, she feels played that she was nominated.

Tommy tells Christie and Jessica that he hoped he had won the HOH. Jessica is crying, she is so upset that she is on the block. Christie tells her its ok, she has had so many moments since she has been on the block four times.. Jessica wants to turn her feelings around and use them as fuel to win the POV.

Holly and Jackson have a disagreement, she tells him that he is being bossy.. He gets upset and put on his music, then takes it off to listen to her. The next morning, Holly feels like she is being shut out by Jackson and doesn't know why.

Time to pick players for the VETO competition. Only six people will participate, the HOH< the two nominees and three people selected by random draw.. Jackson picks first, he chooses Nicole. Christie chooses Tommy. Jessica gets house guest choice and chooses Cliff.

Jackson is sitting on the couch and Holly starts talking to him aggressively and he doesn't like it nor does he feel like he deserves it.

Christie sees the exchange between Jackson and Holly and goes to speak to her. Holly tells her that she doesn't feel like herself, she feels like her whole existence in the house is her showmance.

Holly follows Jackson into the HOH room and asks if they can talk. He says she approached him and called him names a few times in front of the house and he is not going to take it when everything he does in the house is for her. She says that she felt the same way, he was like I'm done, and ignoring her. He says he wasn't, but he is now. Then he says, "been there, done that, got a t-shirt," and stands up. He goes to open a bottle of wine, she asks him to save it and he says no, he won it fair and square. Holly starts crying, he says he is sorry she is upset. He tells her that he has done everything for her and said nothing but good things to her. Holly feels like she wasted her time in the house on a showmance. He says that he feels regret.

Jackson cares for Holly more than he will admit, but he has to make it to finale night and the game comes first.

Time for the VETO competition, this one is called Surf Camp. Each player has a life preserver with their name inside. Their job is to hide in the house where nobody else can find it. One at a time, they will enter the house and have two minutes to hide it. The houseguests whose life preserver is not found will win the POV.

Nicole hides hers under a basket filled with logs. Jackson also hides his under some logs. Cliff hides his under the bottom drawer in the bathroom. Jessica hid hers under her bed in a pillowcase. Christie hides hers under a rug. Tommy hides his under the circular mattress.

Nicole is the first houseguests to go on the hunt to find a life preserver, then Jackson who finds the first one. Everyone else gives it a try, but they find nothing until Jackson goes back in and finds a second one. Tommy finds one. Jessica finds one. Jackson finds the final one.

The life preservers belong to Jessica, Nicole, Jackson, Christie, and Cliff.. Tommy has won the POV. Christie is over the moon happy, this is insane, now she thinks she has a chance to stay in the house. Tommy shows the rest of the house where his life preserver was and they can't believe they missed it under the circular mattress.

Jackson and Holly talk, she asks him if she is now his target because they fought. He says they have no choice but to work together and he is confident that if they focus on the game, they will make it to finale night. Jackson and Holly make up.

Time for the VETO meeting. Tommy decides to use the POV on Christie. Jackson has to name a replacement nominee, he names Cliff.

THE END!
