[Reality-TV-Fanatics] The Voice 19 Recap: The Top 17 Live Playoffs Performances

The Voice season 19 LIVE SHOWS begin tonight with the Top 17 Playoffs featuring coaches Blake SheltonKelly Clarkson John Legend and Gwen StefaniCarson Daly hosts.

After the Top 17 contestants perform, fans can vote for their favorites to advance to next week's semi-finals. Also tonight, the results of last week's 4-way Knockout will be revealed. Either Taryn Papa from Team Blake, Julia Cooper from Team Legend, Larriah Jackson from Team Gwen or Ryan Gallagher from Team Kelly will take the 17th Playoffs spot.

On TUESDAY'S Results show, the TOP 9 will be REVEALED. Two artists from each team advance–one via viewer vote, the other chosen by their respective coach. The last spot will be determined by the INSTANT SAVE.

NOW, it's time to reveal the 4-way Knockout winner. OH NO RYAN GALLAGHER HAD TO EXIT THE COMPETITION!!!!!! His mom had COVID-19. Does he have it too? I was suspicious when the Top 17 preview video was yanked from The Voice sites a few days ago.

The artist moving on to the Top 17 and performing tonight is…Taryn Papa!. Dang. I was rooting for Larriah. But Taryn was my second favorite. Taryn is losing her mind. She needs help down the stairs, she's so freaked out. Ha.

The performances will be grouped by team. Team Kelly is up first.

DeSz – What's Love Got To Do With It by Tina Turner – Team Kelly Clarkson – This song is not the most original song choice, but the key is perfect for Desz's burnished alto. She's vamping it up on stage with a ton of confidence. The arrangement here is on point. John compares Desz to an assassin. "Everything was just right," he says. "You are all the things every Texas woman wants to embody," says fellow Texan, Kelly.

Madeline Consoer – What If I Never Get Over You by Lady A – Team Kelly Clarkson – This is a great song choice for Madeline. It's country, yet pop enough to allow Madeline to show off her impeccable phrasing and range. I love her tone. Blake wonders if she's going country. He loves her song selection. Kelly says "Please vote for Madeline, she kicked her own but to get here!"

Tanner Gomes – Lovin´ On You by Luke Combs – Team Kelly Clarkson – Ehhhhh. I am still disappointed that Kelly chose this karaoke bot over the creative Marisa Corvo, even if she handled her ouster badly. "I love you so much," gushes Kelly, "That was so good…the modulation." Oh apparently the key change was his idea. Good for him, I guess. Kelly is hilarious she's so excited for her team tonight.

Cami Clune – Never Tear us Apart by INXS – Team Kelly Clarkson – I really like Cami's voice. But this arrangement is very similar to what she did with "I Put a Spell on You." She needs to show versatility if she plans on going all the way. Cami is a compelling singer, but she'll lose momentum if she doesn't switch it up. I'm a little disappointed. "You are so cool, and sexy and thrilling to watch. I would just watch you with a spotlight," says Kelly, comparing her to Annie Lennox.

Payge Turner – It´s Gonna Be Me by 'NSYNC – Team Gwen Stefani – Payge accompanies herself on electric guitar for a jazzy version of the pop song.. Interesting arrangement. I love Payge's creativity and bold, fearless choices. However, she sounds a little pitchy tonight? This performance is so low-key, it runs the risk of getting lost among so many performances.. I want her to advance, because I can't wait to see what she does next. Gwen compares the performance to Prince. "It was so you," says Gwen, noting that she didn't lose the essence of the song.

Ben Allen – There Goes My Life by Kenny Chesney – Team Gwen Stefani – A heartstring tugging ballad is a smart song choice at this point in the competition. Especially for Ben, who needs to find a way to stand out. Having said that, there are a bunch of country artists in the Top 17. He, like Tanner, doesn't really stand out. But he does a solid job with an emotional ballad. Gwen says stripping down the song was his idea. "Nice to hear your voice like that," says Gwen, who stole this artist from Blake.

Joseph Soul – How Deep is Your Love by Bee Gees – Team Gwen Stefani – Poor cannon fodder. Joseph's Knockout was montaged. He landed dead last in our favorites poll. It's a very smooth jazzy performance, but unfortunately, forettable. He needed a big performance tonight to pop finally. Gwen gushes that he showed a side tonight, that nobody has seen yet.. She praises him for staying in tune. Isn't that minimum? Besides, he did have pitchy moments.

Carter Rubin – Hero by Mariah Carey – Team Gwen Stefani – Carter, a high school sophomore, is only 15 years old. I've said it before, but he reminds me a lot of Season 9 winner, Jordin Smith. Carter has that same clear, high tone. Gwen chose a suitable, age appropriate song choice for Carter. He lacks life experience, but he does know how to infuse a song with emotion. He's surprisingly NOT half-baked as young singers often are. He just had a birthday, says Gwen. "You're mind blowingly good…tears in my eyes," she says.

Jim Ranger – Rumor by Lee Brice – Team Blake Shelton – Jim has a very inviting, tone. He sounds purposeful, yet effortless. Or in other words, he has confidence. He sings the last chorus almost a cappella, along with a few passionate growls. Jim did what he needed to do to stay in this competition, and then some. Blake calls him "unbelievably talented," predicting Jim will be in the finale. Well!

Worth The Wait – Love is Alive by the Judds – Team Blake Shelton – I think most of all, Blake loves the idea of having a country group on his team. Vocally, this family group is just average. Their harmonies are better than their tentative solo vocals. This is actually the group's weakest performance. It's really shaky in spots. Blake feels the group stepped up to the next level, delivering their best performance of the season. I beg to differ.

Ian Flanigan – Make You Feel my Love by Bob Dylan – Team Blake Shelton – A Bob Dylan song is a good choice for Ian's super low and raspy voice. I haven't really cared for him much, but this is his best performance of the season. It's very understated, but authentic and affecting. Blake is out of his chair YELLING BEGGING America to vote for Ian. Calm down, dude!

Taryn Papa – I Hope You´re Happy Now by Lee Brice and Carly Pearce – Team Blake Shelton – It feels like Taryn has fallen through the cracks this season. There is so much competition on Team Blake, she doesn't have a chance to make the Top 9. But she's one of my favorite Team Blake singers. She's got range, emotion and a lovely alto tone. I'm glad she got another chance to sing. Blake reminds her that he knew she could fight her way out of the 4 way knockout.

Sid Kingsley – Beyond by Leon Bridges – Team Blake – There is so much competition on Team Blake, Sid might have been better off returning to Team Legend after Kelly eliminated him in the Knockouts. He's got the blue-eyed soul thing going on. His soulful passion is appealing. Blake can't believe he ended up on three teams. "This guy has been kicked around on this show…keep him here!" Blake says.

Tamara Jade – Crazy by Gnarls Barkley – Team John Legend – Tamara puts her own spin on "Crazy." She always transforms covers into something marvelous. This arrangement is fierce, as Tamara uses her impressive range to great effect. Loved that little maniacal laugh at the end. John calls her a superstar. "You just own the stage," he says. "You know you're supposed to be here." Her confidence is off the charts. Ha. Tamara calls her coach "Uncle John."

Chloé Hogan – My Future by Billie Eilish – Team John Legend – Chloé is another singer who has cruised under the radar. She's really a special artist. Very musical, with great instincts. And that's beside her skillful phrasing. This performance is just lovely. "Gorgeous!" shouts John. YEP. John compliments her going the extra mile to make her performance perfect.

Bailey Rae – Sweet Music Man by Kenny Rogers – Team John Legend – John wanted to hold on to his first ever country team member. That meant letting go of more talented contestants. At 18, Bailey could use more experience. For instance, she overdoes the country affectations. Having said that, she's delivering the best performance of the season here. So, Kelly Clarkson made the song suggestion. John has no idea how to coach a country singer.

John Holiday – Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra – Team John Legend – After becoming accustomed to John's unusual vocals, I've come to the conclusion, that I don't care for them much. His tone is very…harsh. It always feels like he's pushing too hard. Effortless is not a word I would use to describe his style. Although, he's obviously musical, and his phrasing is excellent. Coach John gushes over John's versatility and talent.
