The Amazing Race Season 31 Recap: Week 4 Live Blog

05/22/2019 by

The episode begins with Colin & Christie learning their next destination: Dubai. We hear from the teams as they make their way to the airport. Colin & Christie believe if they can control themselves, then they can handle anything the race throws at them. Nicole & Victor have finished in second place multiple times, but they are determined to win. Nicole doesn't mind being underestimated. Becca & Floyd mention how they were strangers on their first season, but they are now friends. Tyler & Korey raced in Dubai their last time on the show, so they're looking forward to going back. Leo & Jamal are also very excited to go to Dubai. Janelle & Britney are hoping to finally get a first place finish. Rachel says Elissa could not be a better partner. Rachel & Elissa both say that The Amazing Race is their show.

The teams arrive in Dubai. After sharing a drink with some locals, they are informed their clue awaits in luxury cars. The teams rush inside cars and learn their next destination: Dubai Frame. They must get back in taxis and make their way there. Rachel & Elissa are in first place on the way there. However, their taxi driver gets lost on the way there, allowing Leo & Jamal, Colin & Christie, and Chris & Bret to pass them. Leo & Jamal are the first team to arrive at Dubai Frame. They learn they have a Detour to complete: Fall or Find.

Fall requires teams to parachute off a building, but they must keep their eyes open the entire time. Find requires teams to find five different colored Dinosaur eggs. Leo & Jamal choose to do the Fall Detour, as do Colin & Christie. Chris & Bret choose to do the Find Detour. More teams rush into the building while Rachel & Elissa's taxi driver continues to struggle to find Dubai Frame. They are now in last place.
Rachel & Elissa finally get to Dubai Frame, and they choose to do the Find Detour. They'd rather do the Fall Detour, but only two teams can attempt that Detour at a time. They realize they would save more time doing the Fall Detour. However, once Rachel & Elissa realize that all the other teams besides Leo & Jamal and Colin & Christie are at the Find Detour, they decide to switch to the Fall Detour. Tyler & Korey also make their way to the Fall Detour. Elissa was unsure, but Rachel tells her that Leo & Jamal will be done jumping by the time they arrive at the Fall Detour.
Leo & Jamal attempt the Fall Detour, which requires them to perform a virtual reality game of parachuting off a building and pass a written test about what they see in the game. Leo & Jamal fail the written test, as do Colin & Christie. Tyler & Korey begin their first attempt on the Fall Detour. Meanwhile, the other teams are finding the eggs scattered around a park.
Rachel & Elissa arrive at the Fall Detour as the other teams continue to fail the test. Back at the Find Detour, Chris & Bret are the first team to complete the Detour. They receive their next clue and can now make their way to Soho Garden. Back at the Fall Detour, Colin & Christie and Tyler & Korey finally pass the written test. Leo & Jamal fail the test again. Rachel & Elissa also fail the test on their first attempt.
Nicole & Victor, Becca & Floyd, and Janelle & Britney finally pass the Find Detour. They can also make their way to Soho Garden. Chris & Bret are already there, and they learn they have a Roadblock to complete. There is a party with everyone wearing headphones listening to different music. One team member must be wearing a headphone too, and they must find the other person in the crowd listening to the same music. They will have to use their observational skills to find the person listening to the same music.. Bret gets started on the Roadblock, and Chris gets frustrated as he sees Bret wandering slowly through the crowd instead of trying to be quick with the task. Meanwhile, Leo & Jamal and Rachel & Elissa are still failing the written test.
Nicole & Victor, Colin & Christie, Becca & Floyd, Tyler & Korey, and Janelle & Britney arrive at the Roadblock. Performing the Roadblock for their teams are Nicole, Christie, Floyd, Tyler, and Janelle. Back at the Fall Detour, Leo & Jamal and Rachel & Elissa finally pass the exam. They can now make their way to Soho Garden.
Floyd is the first person to complete the Roadblock. He and Becca can now make their way to the Pit Stop: Dubai Marina. They will also have to zip-line to the Pit Stop mat. As Becca & Floyd depart, Nicole and Tyler complete the task too.. Nicole & Victor and Tyler & Korey can make their way to the Pit Stop too. Chris & Bret can make their way there too after Bret completes the task. In addition, Christie and Janelle complete the task too before Leo & Jamal or Rachel & Elissa arrive.

Leo completes the Roadblock, and he and Jamal are making their way out of the venue as Rachel & Elissa arrive. Rachel quickly completes the Roadblock, but she and Elissa are aware they are in last place as they make their way to the Pit Stop. Rachel is in tears as Elissa tries to comfort her.
Becca & Floyd are the first team to zip-line to the Pit Stop. They land on the mat, and Phil gives them the good news: Becca & Floyd are Team #1! They have won $5,000 each. Chris & Bret greet Phil next as Team #2.
Rachel is still feeling sad on the taxi to the Pit Stop, but Elissa is trying to tell her to remain positive. Afterwards, we see Colin & Christie arrive at the Pit Stop as Team #3. Tyler & Korey and Nicole & Victor arrive at the Pit Stop next as Team #4 and Team #5 respectively.
Elissa is telling Rachel to stop being sad as Janelle & Britney arrive at the Pit Stop as Team #6. Afterwards, Leo & Jamal arrive at the Pit Stop as Team #7.
Rachel & Elissa finally zip-line to the Pit Stop. They believe they are eliminated, but Phil gives them the good news: It is a non-elimination leg! Rachel & Elissa remain in the race.
Leg Summary
1st place: Becca & Floyd (Won $5,000 each)
2nd place: Chris & Bret
3rd place: Colin & Christie
4th place: Tyler & Korey
5th place: Nicole & Victor
6th place: Janelle & Britney
7th place: Leo & Jamal
8th place: Rachel & Elissa
Eliminated: No one

The next leg begins with Becca & Floyd learning their next destination: Uganda. Once there, they must make their way to Kampala and find their next clue. All the teams make their way to the airport to book their flights, and they get on the same flight to Uganda.
There is a mad dash out of the airport in Uganda as teams scramble for taxis. Tyler & Korey are feeling emotional being in Uganda since homosexuality isn't accepted in Uganda. They hope to emerge triumphant and win a leg today. Nicole & Victor and Chris & Bret are the first team to arrive at the mosque, and they learn they must climb up steps in a minaret. They also must count the steps too. Once they write down the correct number, then they will receive their next clue. Tyler & Korey, Colin & Christie, and Rachel & Elissa arrive at the minaret too. Nicole & Victor are the first team to accurately count the steps, and they are followed by Colin & Christie.. Tyler & Korey were wrong about the number, and Chris & Bret didn't count the steps on their first trek up the steps. Nicole & Victor and Colin & Christie can make their way to Owing Market where their next clue awaits. As they make their way there, Tyler & Korey and Chris & Bret get the correct number of steps on their second attempts.
Rachel & Elissa don't get the correct number of steps on their first attempt as Leo & Jamal arrive at the minaret. They redo the task as Leo & Jamal get the correct number on their first attempt. They can make their way to Owing Market as Rachel & Elissa don't get the correct number on their second attempt. The correct number is 272, but they guessed 271 on their second try. Meanwhile, Janelle & Britney are stuck in heavy traffic.
Rachel & Elissa finally write down 272. Becca & Floyd are right behind them, and they also get the correct number of steps. As they make their way to the market, Janelle & Britney finally arrive at the minaret.

Nicole & Victor are the first team to find the clue box at Owing Market. They learn there is a Roadblock to complete. One team member must make a Rolex, which is a snack sold by roadside vendors that contains eggs and vegetables. Victor, Colin, and Korey are the first three to begin the Roadblock. More teams arrive, but Victor is already the first to finish making his Rolex. He and Nicole can make their way to Ggaba Landing Site. Korey is the next to complete the task, and he's followed by Colin. Chris, Floyd, and Jamal are still working on making a Rolex as Janelle & Britney arrive. Britney tells Janelle she should do the task, but Janelle gets confused. She's asking locals where can she find a Rolex watch. Meanwhile, Rachel & Elissa begin their Speed Bump task, which requires them to do laundry for locals.
Chris finally completes his Rolex as Rachel & Elissa complete the Speed Bump. They can now do the Roadblock, and Elissa chooses to do it. Janelle is still wandering around the market looking for Rolex watches as Jamal and Floyd complete making their Rolex snacks. Elissa begins making her Rolex, realizing that she and Rachel are in last place with Janelle & Britney.
At Ggaba Landing Site, Nicole & Victor, Tyler & Korey, and Colin & Christie arrive there first and learn they have a Detour to complete: Salty Roll or Move The Pole. Salty Roll requires teams to prepare fish and soak them in salt.. Move The Pole requires them to deliver and stack wood. The three teams choose to do the Move The Pole Detour. Meanwhile, Janelle is still confused on what to do as Elissa finishes making her Rolex.
Chris & Bret and Leo & Jamal arrive at the Roadblock. Both teams choose to do Move The Pole too. The wood falls from Colin & Christie's bike, but they remain positive. Colin says he would've handled the situation a lot worse back in Season 5, but he's matured now. Back at the Roadblock, Janelle finally realizes what a Rolex is. She's almost in tears as she realizes her mistake and gets started on the task.
Tyler & Korey are the first team to finish the Detour. They receive their next clue, and they learn they have a Head-to-Head to complete. Teams must arrange drums in color specific stacks before checking in at the Pit Stop at Jahazi Pier.
Rachel & Elissa begin on the Salty Roll Detour. As they get started on their task, Tyler & Korey arrive at the Head-to-Head. As they read the rules, Janelle has finally completed the Roadblock. She and Britney can make their way to the Detour now.
Colin & Christie arrive at the Head-to-Head, so it's now a competition between Colin & Christie and Tyler & Korey at the drum stacking task. Phil is there as the Head-to-Head is at the same location as the Pit Stop. Tyler finishes correctly stacking the drums before Colin, so Tyler & Korey are the first team to check-in at the Pit Stop. They are Team #1! They also win a trip to Singapore.
In the second Head-to-Head match-up, Colin and Victor face off against each other. They quickly stack their drums, but it is Colin who stacks the drums first. He and Christie walk over to Phil as Team #2. In the third Head-to-Head match-up, Victor goes up against Chris. Victor easily beats Chris, allowing him and Nicole to take third place.
Rachel & Elissa are already at the Head-to-Head as Janelle & Britney get started on the Salty Roll Detour. The fourth Head-to-Head match-up is between Bret & Floyd, and Bret manages to defeat Floyd. Chris & Bret greet Phil as Team #4. In the fifth Head-to-Head match-up, Floyd beats Leo in the drum stacking task. Becca & Floyd are Team #5.
Janelle & Britney complete the Detour, and they receive their next clue. They learn they have a Head-to-Head challenge, so they have a glimmer of hope to remain in the race. Meanwhile, in the next Head-to-Head match-up, Jamal defeats Rachel. Leo & Jamal greet Phil as Team #6.
The final Head-to-Head will be between Rachel & Elissa and Janelle & Britney. Whoever wins will remain in the race; whoever loses will be eliminated. Rachel and Britney attempt the Head-to-Head, and it is Rachel who stacks her drums first. After the match-up, Rachel & Elissa tearfully hug Janelle & Britney. The four of them walk together to the Pit Stop. Rachel & Elissa are Team #7 and Janelle & Britney are eliminated from the race. Britney says it's disappointing to be eliminated, but she tells Phil that her daughter is a childhood cancer survivor. So, this is not the worst day of her life. She says she finds a lot of strength and inspiration from her daughter, and she and Janelle agree that they were able to show their daughters that women can work together.
Leg Summary
1st place: Tyler & Korey
2nd place: Colin & Christie
3rd place: Nicole & Victor
4th place: Chris & Bret
5th place: Becca & Floyd
6th place: Leo & Jamal
7th place: Rachel & Elissa
8th place: Janelle & Britney (Eliminated)

CBS has yet to confirm if Big Brother After Dark will air on Pop channel. Most BB21 viewers think it will since it has for several seasons. Before Big Brother After Dark (BBAD) moved to Pop, it was on Showtime.
The cast release should come out in the next couple of weeks. They usually reveal the new houseguests about 10 days before the season premiere. So far, the BB21 fans are expecting to see an all new cast, with no returning players, as suggested by the first BB promo.
And here as a reminder from the BB21 official press release: BIG BROTHER follows a group of people living together in a house outfitted with 94 HD cameras and more than 113 microphones, recording their every move 24 hours a day. Each week, someone will be voted out of the house, with the last remaining Houseguest receiving the grand prize of $500,000. [Reality-TV-Fanatics] The Voice Needs to Ditch Gimmicks, Get Back to Basics (Finale Photos!)

I wish they just had it one hour. You can really cram a lot in 60 minutes. Viewers wanted to know the winner but had to stay tuned for 1 hour 55 minutes to find out A lot of the fluff could have been eliminated.

The Voice Needs to Ditch Gimmicks, Get Back to Basics (Finale Photos!)

by

Congratulations to Maelyn Jarmon. The Texas native won season 16 of The Voice. The New York based singer beat out three of Blake Shelton's country singers–Gyth Rigdon, Dexter Roberts and Andrew Sevener–for the crown. From  her very first performance of "Fields of Gold" in the Blind Auditions to her triumphant performance of "Hallelujah" in the finale, Maelyn brought it week after week. Congratulations also go to her coach, John Legend, who won the show as a newbie.
It was a sweet victory at the end of a season fraught with issues, which led to the lowest rated grand finale in The Voice history. First, NBC nixed four Tuesday episodes to make way for Ellen's Games of Games. In order to begin the live shows roughly within the same time frame–mid-April–producers introduced a new round. The fast-paced Live Cross Battles were fun to watch. But the confusingly reconfigured middle round put decisions into the hands of viewers too soon, which resulted in a lopsided field of contestants.

Fans complain that judges/coaches have their finger on the scale longer than need be. But after this season of The Voice, I disagree. Judges/coaches choosing wildcards serves to keep the field of contestants musically diverse. Sometimes democracy isn't a good thing, as the results of the Cross Battles–heavily country and male–proved. Also, it took the show TOO long to get to the Top 13. And then when it got there, only three episodes remained, leaving no time for viewers to bond with the  contestants.
If it's necessary for budget reasons to cut back on episodes, producers should consider starting off with fewer singers. A Top 40 instead of a Top 48 perhaps. Go back to the Blinds/Battles/Knockouts/Lives format. Or at the very least, find a way to keep the teams moving forward together longer before allowing viewer votes to break them apart. In the end, there should be at least 4-5 weeks to whittle the Top 12/13 down to the winner.
Speaking of a Top 13, ditch the Comeback Stage, which adds a 13th singer to the field of finalists. Throwing an unprepared singer into the mix at the Top 12 is a dumb idea. In particular, a no-turn singer who hasn't had the advantage of television exposure is at a distinct disadvantage. It is difficult for a singer unfamiliar to audiences to win an instant-save. This season, producers added battles and cross battle round losers to the competition, which defeated its original purpose of giving no-turn singers a second chance. Of course the vocalist who won–LB Crewe–had lasted the longest on the television show.

Next season, instead of throwing evermore confusing gimmicks at the wall to fix things, NBC should get back to basics. Producers should look to SIMPLIFY the show and concentrate on the things fans love about the show. And while the fans love the relationships between the coaches, they need to keep focus on the artists as well..

Now, do enjoy a gallery of photos from Tuesday's (May 21) grand finale!
