Rafael Nadal defeated Kevin Anderson in three straight sets on Sunday to win his third U.S. Open championship.
Nadal won 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 against first-time major finalist Anderson. The win is Nadal's second Grand Slam title of 2017 and the 16th of his career — just three behind his longtime rival, Roger Federer.
loane Stephens has won the US Open, beating Madison Keys in the final on Saturday, 6-3, 6-0. It's Stephens' first ever Major title, and she earned it in dominant fashion.
Stephens entered as an unseeded player but took down Venus Williams, Anastasija Sevastova, Julia Goerges, Ashleigh Barty, Dominika Cibulkova, Roberta Vinci, and Keys en route to the title.
The first set started out close, with Keys holding serve on her first two games, but Stephens managed to score a break in the fifth game and then again in the ninth game to take it, 6-3.
Things didn't open up any for Keys after that. Stephens held to open the second set, broke Keys, held again, and things weren't necessarily competitive from there. Keys lost one break with a double fault in the second set, and though she held on for as long as she could in her final service game, it wasn't enough.
Stephens actually hit fewer winners than Keys overall but only had six unforced errors, significantly less than Keys' final tally of 30. Stephens had just 10 winners to Keys' 18 and hit no aces while Keys had three. Keys didn't manage a single break in her three attempts though, while Stephens converted on five of 12.
Keys, 22, was making her first appearance in a Grand Slam final. She made it to the fInal by beating Kaia Kanepi in the quarterfinals and then CoCo Vandeweghe in the semifinal. Previously, she had made it to the Australian Open semifinals once before, her previous best performance at a Grand Slam.
Stephens, 24, was also making her first appearance in a Grand Slam final. She made it to the final by beating Williams in the semifinal. Williams was the heavy favorite to win the tournament but Stephens made it past Williams with an incredible third set performance.
Both women in the finals are from America, as were the two who were eliminated from the semifinals. It was the first time since 1985 that four American women made it into the penultimate round of a Grand Slam event.
