[Reality_And_Drama_TV_Shows] 'MasterChef' Recap: The Judges Make a Shocking Decision During the Souffle Pressure Test

Gabrielle hit a gold mine. Going to get a free ride to culinary school and when he is done he will be gainfully employed by Aaron. Fantastic!
First time I have ever seen a non elimination . It was great to see that in the second show.
Sorry folks I don't care much for Ebony or Yachecia. Don't really care that much for Jeff. I guess I like Dino Jason and Cait . But to win this? I just really don't know even at this late date. Who do you want to win this?

'MasterChef' Recap: The Judges Make a Shocking Decision During the Souffle Pressure Test

There are a lot of tears on season 8 of MasterChef. In "Chopsticks & Pasta," someone in the top seven is sent home, but Gordon and Aaron assure that person that the MasterChef kitchen won't be the end of their cooking journey. In "Pop-Up Restaurant," the judges have a very, very difficult decision to make during the pressure test. But what they decide may shock you!

Chopsticks Mystery Box

Inside the mystery boxes are chopsticks, so the top seven must create an Asian-inspired dish with their own spin on it. They have 60 minutes to make something imaginative and not something from a take-out box. The three dishes the judges ultimately try are Dino's cream cheese-shrimp wonton with massaman curry and basmati rice, Jason's pork and prawn dumplings with roasted shrimp broth and Jeff's Vietnamese filet mignon pho with pork meatball in a beef broth.

Christina and Gordon love Dino's dish. Gordon says it's exactly like him, it's so wrong it's right. Jason sheds some tears as he explains the dish his grandmother used to make. Aaron is very impressed, as is Christina. Jeff's homage to his brother-in-law also impresses Gordon and Aaron, however, both judges agree that Jeff needs more protein in the bowl and less noodles.

Dino is victorious in this mystery box challenge.

A Pasta Elimination Challenge

Since Dino wins the mystery box challenge, he doesn't have to cook in the elimination challenge. And he also gets to assign six different pastas to the rest of the contestants to prepare. He gives Jason papparedelle, Eboni farfalle, Gabriel cannelloni, Cate cavatelli, Yachecia tortellini and Jeff egg yolk ravioli. Dino tries to use strategy by giving Jeff the hardest pasta to make. But Jeff actually welcomes the challenge and is ready to win.

The chefs get 45 minutes to make the pasta dishes from scratch. They prepare the following:

  • Jeff -- egg yolk ravioli with truffle oil, sage-brown butter sauce and pecorino Romano
  • Eboni -- Farfalle with sausage, mushrooms, spinach and fried basil
  • Gabriel -- cannelloni with ricotta-spinach filling and rustic tomato sauce
  • Cate -- cavatelli with peas, mint and herb ricotta
  • Jason -- pappardelle with beef and pork Bolognese sauce
  • Yachecia -- chicken and pork tortellini with ricotta, chicken broth, roasted tomatoes and pesto
Gordon and Aaron agree that while Jeff's plate is a mess, the ravioli is perfect with a perfect flavor. Eboni also nails her dish, which Christina says is cooked beautifully. Gabriel, unfortunately, doesn't make the pasta the way it's supposed to be. Christina explains that it should be round, but his are flat. Christina and Gordon also agree that the flavors are just not there either.

Cate seems to skirt by with her dish while Jason wows Aaron with his dynamite flavor. Lastly, Gordon tries Yachecia's tortellini. He thinks her pairing of chicken and pork is ridiculous. He thinks the shape of the pasta is great, but there's no texture and no flavor. He calls it her worst performing dish so far in the competition.

An Offer He Can't Refuse

The judges love Jason's dish, but crown Eboni the winner of the challenge. The bottom two are Yachecia and Gabriel. The judges send Gabriel home. However, they bring everyone to tears as Gordon tells Gabriel he will be paying for his tuition for culinary school. In addition, Aaron offers Gabriel a job at one of his New Orleans restaurants when he graduates. All the judges agree that 19-year-old Gabriel has the potential to be great.

Pop-Up Team Challenge

In the next challenge, the top six are split into two teams to prepare two appetizers and two entrees for food critics, writers and chefs at a pop-up restaurant at Triunfo Creek Vineyard. Eboni heads up the blue team and chooses Jeff and Cate. Jason picks Dino and Yachecia for his red team.

The judges not only choose the dishes the chefs will be preparing, but they will also choose the winning team based on the feedback of the patrons. Gordon demonstrates each of the four dishes, as the top six scribble down a bunch of notes. The two appetizers are seared scallops with grape and frisee salad and lobster capellini with chardonnay beurre blanc and caviar vinaigrette. The entrees are duck breast with truffle polenta, turnips and cherries and filet mignon with wild mushrooms, fingerling potatoes and a red wine sauce.

Once the orders start coming in, Jason struggles to remember what they are. Dino is concerned that Jason isn't vocal enough. But once Gordon stops by and gives one of his colorful pep talks, Jason gets really vocal, especially when some of the lobster dishes come out cold. But the red team isn't the only struggling with the lobster. Cate has to send back a bunch of lobster dishes to Jeff, as some are raw and some are overcooked. This, of course, sets Eboni off as she starts yelling at him, while Cate tries to keep the peace.

The entrees also come out at varying temperatures from both teams. Gordon tells the red team to wake up and stop sending out raw meat, while Christina brings back a raw filet to the blue team. Eboni blames Jeff for the inconsistent entrees too.

The winning team, which goes directly into the top five, is the red team. This win means that Jeff is 0-5 when it comes to team challenges. Eboni keeps nagging him, calling him bad luck. But surprisingly, Jeff doesn't give in, and he heads into the pressure test ready to prove himself.

A Souffle Pressure Test to Remember

While Eboni and Jeff have been in a pressure test before, this is Cate's first elimination challenge. She's not thrilled about it, as Eboni and Jeff bicker about whose fault the loss is. Gordon tells all three that they will be baking a chocolate soufflé that needs to be light, airy and total perfection. They get just 35 minutes to present just one to the judges.

Eboni and Cate are thrilled by the challenge, while Jeff knows desserts and sweets are not his forte. However, he is not letting the task bring him down. He goes into the challenge ready to make it up to the balcony. Both he and Eboni prepare four soufflés so they can pick the perfect one to present, while Cate makes just one.

All three make it down to the judges' table in time, and one by one the judges taste each soufflé without giving feedback to the contestants. Gordon tastes Jeff's soufflé first. He heads back to the judges and tells them it's mind-blowing. When Aaron tries Eboni's soufflé, he tells the judges it's a textbook dish. And when Christina tries Cate's last, she thinks it's perfect. The judges confer for a bit and come back out to make their announcement.

Gordon says the soufflé is one of the most difficult things a home chef will prepare. He adds that no one made a mistake during the challenge. Jeff is announced as the first person to head up to the balcony. Next, Gordon says Eboni is safe. And just when Cate is ready to take off her apron and head home to Chicago, Gordon tells her she is staying too. The judges say that all of the soufflés are perfect, so they couldn't send anyone home based on the challenge, which is another first for MasterChef.

The Top Six

So even though there should be five chefs left, there are still six, which is fine. I agree with the judges' decision not to send anyone home. Since Jeff, Eboni and Cate are being judged on the soufflé alone, there is nothing wrong with any of the dishes. Now, if the judges had to base their decision on the entire season, Jeff might have been the person going home. But, he really turned himself around in the last few challenges. The hot-headed Jeff who yelled at Gordon during one of the challenges is gone, and now we have a Jeff who wants to take home the trophy.

I think it's great that Gordon is sending Gabriel to culinary school. I agree that he's very young and has a lot to learn, so hopefully he'll excel in school and then at Aaron's restaurant.

It's going to be very tough in the final episodes of MasterChef to get a winner. The top six are very, very strong chefs. If I had to pick right now, I would say the two going head to head in the final challenge will probably be Yachecia and Cate, but as I said, it's really anyone's game.

Do you think someone should have been sent home in the soufflé challenge? Who would you have sent home? Were you surprised that Gordon is sending Gabriel to culinary school? Do you think Yachecia should have gone home instead of Gabriel? Let us know in the comments below.
