'Curious': Vanessa Trump hires a criminal defense attorney to handle her divorce from Donald Trump Jr.
Legal experts raised some proverbial eyebrows Friday over news that Vanessa Trump had hired a criminal defense attorney, not an expert in family law, to represent her in her divorce from Donald Trump Jr.
"It's a curious choice if it's an amicable separation," Manhattan family law expert Bonnie Rabin told Page Six of Vanessa Trump's choice of legal representation.
Early reports suggested the divorce would indeed be amicable. Vanessa Trump filed for an "uncontested" hearing and the couple issued a joint statement, saying they "will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families." Vanessa Trump and Trump Jr. have five children together, ages 3 to 10.
But the hiring of a criminal defense attorney suggests that Vanessa Trump expects that the divorce could become "messy," New York magazine said.
The timing is curious as well. Vanessa Trump's divorce filing Thursday came the same day that special counsel Robert Mueller subpoenaed President Donald Trump's family business for documents, including some related to its investments in Russia. Vanessa Trump's estranged husband is running the Trump Organization while his father serves in the White House.
Multiple reports say that Mueller's investigators are keenly focused on a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower that Trump Jr. arranged. According to reports, Trump Jr., Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner met with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer and four others with Russian ties, in the hopes of getting incriminating information on Hillary Clinton.
"If it's an amicable (divorce), you wouldn't be highlighting the criminal aspect," Rabin told Page Six. Rabin is not involved in the case.
