R. Kelly charged with 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse

R. Kelly on Friday was charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse following years of accusations of sexual misconduct against the R&B star. 

He was charged in Cook County, Ill., and his first court date is listed as March 8, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

County prosecutors were reportedly set to appear before a judge on Friday afternoon to obtain an arrest warrant.

The Chicago Tribune noted that the court documents do not make it immediately clear how many alleged victims are involved. 

Three of the indictments referred to a minor between the ages of 13 and 16. 

Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx was reportedly spurred to pursue charges after a new documentary series, "Surviving R. Kelly," released last month detailed a series of sexual abuse allegations against the 52-year-old singer. Multiple women made accusations of decades-long sexual abuse in the series.

The documentary led to R. Kelly being dumped by his record label. It also triggered a series of protests against him, including one in front of his Chicago music studio.

Foxx urged any accuser to come forward following the "deeply, deeply disturbing" claims against Kelly, the Tribune noted. Her office was reportedly flooded with tips. 

This is the second time Kelly has been charged with a sex crime by Cook County prosecutors. 

He was acquitted of child pornography charges by a jury in 2008 after prosecutors alleged that he filmed himself having sex with a girl they believed to be 13 at the time.

Steve Greenberg, a criminal defense attorney representing Kelly, told the Associated Press last month that "the allegations aren't true because he never knowingly had sex with an underage woman, he never forced anyone to do anything, he never held anyone captive, he never abused anyone."
