ESPN Lays Off 150 Studio & Production Employees

November 29, 2017 6:37am
ESPN
ESPN is eliminating 150 studio and production employees, cuts that do not include on-air talent.
The announcement was made by ESPN President John Skipper in a memo to staff this morning.
The positions, a source says, have been eliminated as ESPN redirect resources to what the company considers newer growth areas, like ESPN+, the direct-to-consumer service debuting this spring, and a new digital SportsCenter on Snapchat. The company is also launching the ACC Network, and relaunching the ESPN app, and will premiere new shows including Get Up, from New York featuring Mike Greenberg, Michelle Beadle and Jalen Rose, and a new daily show with Bomani Jones and Pablo Torre.
Skipper's memo reads:
"Today we are informing approximately 150 people at ESPN that their jobs are being eliminated.
"We appreciate their contributions, and will assist them as much as possible in this difficult moment with severance, a 2017 bonus, the continuation of health benefits and outplacement services. They will also appreciate your support.
"The majority of the jobs eliminated are in studio production, digital content, and technology and they generally reflect decisions to do less in certain instances and re-direct resources.
"We will continue to invest in ways which will best position us to serve the modern sports fan and support the success of our business."
