The Voice Recap Season 19 Knockouts 3

Team Kelly Clarkson

Marisa's "good friend" Diane Warren co-wrote her song pick! Marisa's story: Her label dropped her when she came out as gay. "You have this opportunity to show everyone who YOU are," is a thing Usher says to every frigging contestant. Kelly gives Marisa tips on phrasing. Usher suggests giving the vulnerability at top "less gas." Tanner and his news anchor girlfriend have been together 5 years. "Visit little places that are different," Kelly tells Tanner. "This song is all about personality.."

Marisa Corvo – If I Could Turn Back Time by Cher – Hm…there are pitch problems right off the bat. But she's concentrating on sounding "broken" as Kelly suggested in the mentoring session. She plays with the melody a lot, it's almost like a different song! When her foot hits the gas near the end, the song comes alive. Still, she's got to work on pitch.

Tanner Gomes – Real Good Man by Tim McGraw – This song pick is a dud. Only a singer with a TON of charisma could make this song work. It's limp in Tanner's hands. Yawn. Marisa wins be default.

Blake thought Tanner kept up with Marisa. He was impressed with her range. John calls Tanner's performance fun. John observes correctly, that Marisa took a minute to find her footing, but then the song took off when she did. Gwen thinks Marisa has everything going for her. She admires Tanner's "cowboy" swag. Kelly picks Tanner, Marisa is eliminated. Wow. Wrong choice. "Tanner has really shown me different sides," says Kelly.

Team John Legend

John blocked Kelly from turning for John Holiday during the Blind Auditions. Cami is a musical theater major in college. John thinks the arrangement needs to sound modern, more "eerie." Billie Eilish is the inspiration for the arrangement. John is covering Eric Carmen's All By Myself, but his inspiration is the Celine Dion version. John explains that growing up gay could be lonely, but he's not anymore. John has been married to his loving husband for 7 years. Usher wants more emotion from John. "Fewer runs, let notes ring," coach John advises.

Cami Clune – I Put a Spell on You by Screamin' Jay Hawkins – This new arrangement is pretty great. Cami is giving off some Haley Reinhart vibes right now. The slow build makes the song. She ends the performance on a powerful a cappella note. A captivating performance, Cami had a moment there.

John Holiday – All By Myself by Eric Carmen/Celine Dion – I have appreciated John's unusual voice in the past. But this performance is painful. His upper register is nasally, strained and unpleasant. It's like endless bleating. Those high notes? NOPE NOPE NOPE. He's got a huge range, but not that huge.

Gwen calls Cami's performance "special." She feels blessed to witness John's talent. Kelly compliments John's gift. She thinks Cami is getting better and better. Blake calls John an "enormous pain in his a**." Jokingly! Coach John calls both performances "flawless." John picks John, Kelly steals Cami Kelly calls Cami the "dark horse" in the competition now.

Taryn Papa – Cry by Faith Hill – Team Blake – Blake saved Taryn because he feels she can fight her way out of the knockout. Taryn's raspy voice is both impactful and compelling. She hits those emotional notes with skill. Beautiful phrasing.

Julia Cooper – Wish You Were Gay by Billie Eilish – Team Legend – John reminds Julia to work on her enunciation. It's a perfect song choice for Julia's jazzy, swoopy voice. I actually prefer this to Billie mumbly interpretation.
Larriah Jackson – One and Only by Adele – Team Gwen – Larriah is a talented young singer whom Gwen should have put through all the way to the Playoffs. She's only 15, but sounds years more mature.  Her vocal range
Ryan Gallagher – Time to Say Goodbye by Andrea Bocelli & Sarah Brightman – Team Kelly – Ryan's mom was in ICU battling Covid. Thankfully she's out now. A big dramatic pop opera performance partly sung in Italian, is going to steal the show tonight. However, I prefer pop music, so my vote will be going elsewhere. Ryan has that Chris Mann thing going for him. is incredible.

After the performances, each coach advocates for their Team Members and BEG FOR AMERICA'S VOTES.
