Katy Perry shoes pulled from stores over blackface resemblance

Katy Perry shoes pulled from stores over blackface resemblance

Shoes from singer Katy Perry's fashion line are reportedly being pulled from stores because of the blackface controversies in Virginia.
The shoes in question are black sandals and mules featuring eyes, a nose and red lips. As a result, the shoes resemble blackface makeup.
Citing "sources connected" to Perry, TMZ reported that the label is "in the process of pulling the shoes," in order to "be respectful and sensitive."

The shoes are currently for sale at Dillard's, Walmart and Macy's, as well as dozens of others worldwide, according to the report and the Katy Perry Collections website.

A search on the Katy Perry Collections website for "face" did not turn up any results as of Monday. It is unclear if the shoes were ever available online.
Last week, fashion designer Gucci apologized and stopped selling a sweater after criticism that it resembled blackface. And Prada in December pulled a line of key chains and other products featuring a monkey-like character that drew similar backlash.
The incident comes as a blackface controversy roils Virginia politics. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) has said he will not resign despite calls to step down after a blackface photo from his medical school yearbook surfaced. He says that he does not believe he was in the photo. And the state's Democratic attorney general, Mark Herring, also admitted to wearing "brown makeup" to dress as a rapper in college.
