Big Brother: Celebrity Edition premiere review: Same show, slightly more famous cast

The Big Brother: Celebrity Edition premiere is here! This was a weird, crazy, but also surprisingly-entertaining episode with a lot of cheese and a little bit of awkwardness. The thing that was the most surprising, though, was just how much this felt like normal Big Brother. We're not sure if this is just a good job by casting or the show just putting its familiar twist on everybody in the game, but it really did feel tonight a lot like we were seeing these players acting much like players we see in the normal version of the show.
Before anything else, let's give you a quick snapshot of the cast
Mark McGrath – Why is he here? Can he just go and perform somewhere else? What hipster lumberjack did he steal the plaid shirt from?
Brandi Glanville – We love that "thrower of wine" is one of the reasons why she is famous. She could be fun … could.
Metta World Peace – We're starting to think that Metta is just on the show in order to sell all of his panda shirts.
Ariadna Gutierrez – The former Miss Colombia, famously mostly for confusing Steve Harvey at Miss Universe.
Ross Mathews – He loves Big Brother and we know that he's super high-energy. Also, we love that he highlights being on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame.
Shannon Elizabeth – She is a HUGE threat. She knows the show and she used to play poker. Also, not everyone may not she's as dangerous as she is in the game.
Chuck Liddell – He's an MMA fighter, but he's more of an everyday father at this point.
Keshia Knight Pulliam – Who knew that she had her own spice line? Well, we feel like some people did … we just didn't have any clue about this.
Marissa Jaret Winokur – She's an actor/director and apparently her son is an enormous super-fan of the show. His reaction to learning about it was FANTASTIC.
James Maslow – He's best known for Big Time Rush and he's a huge social-media guy. In other words, he's going to really go nuts without the phone.
Omarosa – Yep, this is going to be fun. Even her introduction to this season was scary. She's probably just here to get away from cable news.

The early dynamics of the house

One of the first things of note we learned is that Shannon and Marissa actually know each other — we'd call shenanigans, but this entire show is so ridiculous that you had to expect some preexisting relationships. The two seem to be in good with Omarosa, who is doing her part to play nice and not cause problems.
Before the HoH Competition the only real argument that we saw was between James and Brandi, and it wasn't really so much an argument as two people not getting along.

The Head of Household Competition

We feel for some of the guys here since this was not a competition built for them. They had to hang on for dear life while grabbing these giant fake statues, and the bigger you are, the harder it is to hold on to it.
James was better equipped to win this than some of the other guys, but massive kudos to Shannon for being so tough and resilient here. She knew the pressure was on her in order to win this and that she did! She is the first HoH of this celebrity season, and that gives her and the other women a whole lot of power.

CarterMatt Verdict

The music at the start of the premiere threw us off somewhat, but we have to say that beyond that, very little else in this episode caught us by surprise. This was a pretty straightforward Big Brother with a slightly more famous cast. That's not really a bad thing, though some of the same problems with the original are present here including the canned confessionals.
Oh, and did we also mention terrible twists that over-complicate the game? That brings us to the bag twist, where basically someone is going to get a chance to "recast" Head of Household. We don't know how the twist quite works yet, at least in terms of how long it lasts.
