So, you know how sometimes you can see the twists coming but you don't even mind because what you're watching is so entertaining? That was me during "Come On Down To My Boat, Baby," a fun and frothy hour of Grey's Anatomy which also managed to throw in some surprising turns in addition to the predictable developments. Men lounging on a boat, women performing kick-ass surgeries, a well-deserved honor for our titular heroine, the new intern mixer...this hour had something for everyone as it brought the funny while deftly kicking off a new round of stories for pretty much every character.

In The Beginning

As the episode opens, Owen finds Amelia in their his house. She needed some notes and realized they were in a textbook at the house where she no longer lives. So, being Amelia, she just dropped by unannounced to retrieve the book. They make awkward and slightly wistful conversation as they wonder if they made the right decision to divorce and conclude that they did. Owen says he's "done with torture and shame and guilt" while Amelia notes that there's still a great deal of affection between them, despite the fact that there's no longer a tumor in her head. They agree to be close friends.

At the hospital, everyone is gaga over Meredith's cover photo and article (presumably about Megan Hunt's case) in the Journal of Surgical Advancement. Meredith demurs but is pleased none the less to be a surgeon on the rise. Alex asks Meredith to be nice to Jo (who took her name off the article to protect herself from her abusive husband, Paul) and not just "Mer nice." Actually nice. Jackson, who also took his name off the article so Meredith could be considered for a Harper Avery Award, is bummed and bored. After Karev casually mentions that Avery should buy a boat, he does just that and invites Karev, Hunt, Warren, and DeLuca to join him for an impromptu "sick" day. Meanwhile, the ladies are running the hospital as a slow day (Bailey chides April and Arizona for "standing around and leaning against things") quickly gets crazy and weird.

Amelia/Tom

It's Amelia's first day back at work and she's freaking out a little. What if she isn't the surgeon she used to be without a tumor in her head? Mentor Tom Koracick (delightfully and devillishly played once more by Greg Germann) is out the door, having cleared Dr. Shepherd for surgery, but she persuades him to stay for the day. The patient is Melody Tambourine (Tom, you're so bad!) Harmony, a nice woman with a husband and three kids. Koracick has the sense to stand at Amelia's side in the surgery until she realizes that she doesn't need him there. He also admits that she's a better surgeon than he is. That seems to turn her on because, as I guessed at the top of the hour, they sleep together, despite their love-hate-mentor-student relationship, in an on-call room.

Arizona/April/Maggie/Bailey

Arizona and April are "Tindering" as AZ laments to her pal that she's broken up with Carina accidentally. (Something about Arizona needing more physical space because Sofia's moving home and Carina thinking she needed emotional space....whatever.) April claims she can't wait to date again as long as the guy "doesn't work in this hospital." (Preach!) Miranda says, "I don't get to swipe! Let me enjoy this moment!" and then swipes right for Maggie who realizes she should be actively dating and sets up a meet with "David M." in the hospital lobby, but she can't follow through when the time comes.

Arizona is freaking out about parenting a soon-to-be teenage Sofia, but after she gives a stern talking to an 18-year-old patient, April assures her that she will do just fine. The patient in question, Danielle, tried to smuggle a gun to her jailed boyfriend by putting it up her vagina. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

Meanwhile, Miranda deals with a hypochondriac patient, Mr. Nelligan (played by the fabulous Robert Picardo), who has been coming to the hospital regularly for 15 years with imaginary ailments. But after Nelligan gets shot in the leg by Danielle's gun-gina (trademark Carina DeLuca, who has a hilarious scene with Richard as they recount the strangest objects they've removed from bodies), he insists his files be transferred to Seattle Presbyterian and he is never coming back to Grey Sloan.

Meredith/Jo

Meredith patient, Judge Jeffery King, has a bad liver following stage four colon cancer. He's not eligible for a liver transplant, so Meredith is doing a procedure called an ALPPS. It's groundbreaking. This is the first one on the West Coast. Jo, who's in the running for Chief Resident, is freaked out because Meredith is being super nice to her. Too nice. Even after Jo makes an ethical breach and recommends that Jeffery has the surgery, Meredith doesn't confront her. Jo thinks it's because of her past. Does Meredith think Jo's fragile and weak? It finally comes out that Alex put Meredith up to it because it's the "crazy thing he does when he loves somebody." Meredith reverts to normal behavior and tells Jo that she's a survivor, not a victim. She's on Meredith's service because she deserves it. And if she ever pulls a stunt like the ethnics break again, Grey will suspend Wilson herself.

After a conversation with the judge, Jo decides to file for divorce from her husband, Paul. It's the only way she will be free to live her life. The judge throws a clot and dies. Minutes later, Meredith is nominated for the Harper Avery Award. She immediately throws herself into work and tells Miranda that she has six patients who don't qualify for liver transplants who could be helped with the ALPPS.

Where The Boys Are

After buying a boat, by which I mean a yacht, Jackson and the guys pile into his Batmobile Lexus and head to the water. On short notice, they don't have any crew and no one knows how to pilot the boat, so they party while still at the dock! As they tie surgeon's knots and filet fish, secrets are revealed. The guys convince Jackson that Maggie is not his sister but things get awkward when Jackson draws a parallel with Alex and Meredith. He never wanted to sleep with her, right? Alex is puzzled. Who said anything about sleeping together. (Ugh. I fear this means Jaggie is full steam ahead. Noooooo!)

Anyway, Andrew (who complains that Carina always sleeps with his friends) needs to find a new place to live since Sofia is moving home. Owen offers to let Andrew stay at his place for awhile. Ben confesses that he's taking part in the fire training academy. It makes him feel alive. But don't tell Miranda! They get called back to the hospital abruptly to attend the new intern mixer. Drunk, they take a cab to the party, where Owen meets Carina. Arizona and Andrew later find them kissing passionately in a supply closet! "Oh come on!" says an exasperated Andrew, who discovers one of the new interns is a woman named Sam with whom he clearly has a past. Finally, Jackson tells Miranda that he wants to feel alive and in the game. He's anonymously giving her half of his quarter of a billion dollar fortune to support research and groundbreaking medical treatments. Whoa.
