[FunBBGroup] Tips and emotional help during COVID-19

This is a from the National Suicide Prevention Helpline, a FB post they made a few days ago.  I will share the link, and hopefully copy and paste the contents of the link here.

https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/current-events/supporting-your-emotional-well-being-during-the-covid-19-outbreak/?fbclid=IwAR3G76Yamz2JKQ7pGFrbSLT9W-6Uq-52iPzQ9s2wKvzivLEUum8OrdjB7YQ

Emotional Wellbeing During the COVID-19 Outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have described the coronavirus, or COVID-19, as an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that has now been detected in more than 100 locations internationally, including in the United States. The virus has been named "SARS-CoV-2" and the disease it causes has been named "coronavirus disease 2019" (abbreviated "COVID-19"). You can read more about COVID-19 on the CDC's "Situation Summary" page.

Infectious disease outbreaks such as COVID-19, as well as other public health events, can cause emotional distress and anxiety. Feeling anxious, confused, overwhelmed or powerless is common during an infectious disease outbreak, especially in the face of a virus with which the general public may be unfamiliar. These feelings of distress and anxiety can occur even if you are not at high risk of getting sick.

Coping Tips

People that are feeling emotional distress related to COVID-19 can take actions to help support themselves and others.

  • Set a limit on media consumption, including social media, local or national news.
  • Stay active. Make sure to get enough sleep and rest. Stay hydrated and avoid excessive amounts of caffeine or alcohol. Eat healthy foods when possible.
  • Connect with loved ones and others who may be experiencing stress about the outbreak. Talk about your feelings and enjoy conversation unrelated to the outbreak.
  • Get accurate health information from reputable sources. For health information about COVID-19, please contact the Centers for Disease Control at cdc.gov, your local healthcare provider, or your local 211 and 311 services, if available..
  • If you're experiencing emotional distress related to COVID-19, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or your local crisis line.
  • For coping tools and resources, visit the Lifeline website at suicidepreventionlifeline.org or Vibrant Emotional Health's Safe Space at vibrant.org/safespace.

About Lifeline Crisis Centers

The accessible and free mental health crisis services that Lifeline crisis centers offer are especially vital during times of social distancing, and can be considered an essential service. Lifeline crisis centers may be used to overcome barriers of access to services caused by distance or unavailability of in-person mental health support, and can prevent unnecessary exposure during a pandemic. When individuals may be experiencing heightened anxiety, depression, and stress caused by infectious disease outbreaks and accompanying social-isolation measures, having access to trained and caring counselors may be critical for a community's mental wellbeing.

To find your local crisis center and learn how you can support it, visit the Our Crisis Centers page.

Re: [FunBBGroup] Latest Covid-19 stats

And by practicing it, you stay safe from those that don't.   It's like driving.  Not everyone follows the laws.  So you adjust your driving to keep you and yours safe.   This COVID-19 is the same theory.   Not everyone will follow the rules, so you make sure you and yours are safe.  :)

Re: [FunBBGroup] Latest Covid-19 stats

Again, we are only hearing the worst.   Given the world population is over 7 billion, 500,000 isn't a large number.   Take precautions seriously, but you will seriously stress out if you focus on the numbers.   If your community isn't requiring social distancing, practice it anyhow.

I'm being serious when I say stress makes you sick.   And stress worsens issues you already have.

Maybe only watch your local news, and avoid Twitter for a week or a few days?

First, breathe :).   Many stores have implemented senior hours, which those who are high risk can use, too.  Typically first thing in the morning, like 6am, when the store is not only freshly stocked but also freshly cleaned.   Call to find out if you can take advantage of that, due to the diabetes.

Now, many who get this are reporting it isn't bad.   We, of course, will hear more about the horror stories than the not a big deal stories.   So keep that in mind..   The hospital horror stories are scary.  But unless you have breathing troubles you likely won't need to be hospitalized.   Treat it like the flu.

Look at the common cold.   It spreads so easily.  Washing hands, cleaning surfaces, don't share delinks or plates with others, etc.   most of us are already practicing social distancing right now.

My friend, who was diagnosed last week, is better.  She never once had to be hospitalized.   She is in a high risk group with underlying conditions, and recovered fine so far.   Someone else I know got it, too, but only found out when he got tested because his county health department made him.  He had been in a waiting room with several who tested positive.   He has asthma, he said he just used his rescue inhaler for a few days when he normally doesn't.   Which got me thinking, last week, I had all symptoms, and used my rescue inhaler a lot.  This week?  Haven't used it once, and both Robert and I don't have fevers or coughs anymore, except the occasional cough.  So now I'm wondering if we got it.  To be honest, I hope we did....   Get it over with :)

Also.   Depression over this, and anxiety, are happening in people who normally don't suffer from either.   As a person who has both, and has had them most of her life. I strongly echo what experts are saying.   Meditate for a few minutes if you can.   Find something you enjoy that relaxes you.   For me it's playing computer games, reading, coloring, and watching Netflix or Hulu.   And focus on one good thing each day.   Now, that one seemed silly to me when I first started doing it over 10 years ago, but it helps.   Some days it was literally a pretty weed I saw.   Or hearing a bird chirp.   But reminding yourself of one good thing each day can help, too.

Hugs to you all, and I hope everyone is able to get through this not just mentally and physically, but financially as well.

Carrie Courter
