Survivor Season 38 Edge Of Extinction Week 5 Recap and Live Blog

The episode begins on Extinction Island. It's the morning of Day 12, and Rick notes how Reem, Keith, and Chris are happy that he's failed. He's viewing Edge of Extinction as another challenge for him to overcome. Afterwards, we see the three tribes greet Jeff for the reward challenge. They must go through a series of obstacles and throw bolas at a target. The first two tribes to finish will win a sandwich reward. The challenge begins, and Lesu falls behind as they struggle reaching the bolas tied up on a beam. "Absolute disaster for Lesu!" Jeff says as Manu and Kama extend their lead over Lesu. Lesu finally start throwing bolas too, but Manu and Kama already have some of their bolas on their targets. However, Lesu has zero bolas on their target as the other two tribes already have three each. It takes four bolas to win reward, and Kama is the first to complete the challenge. Kama wins reward! It's down between Manu and Lesu, and Victoria lands the last bola for Manu. Manu wins reward! Lesu will go back to tribal council empty-handed. "It's almost like we're cursed," David says. Kelley compares David to a girl in her confessional. She points how he weighs less than her. Due to David's small stature, Kelley thinks he's worthless in challenges.


We see Kama enjoy their sandwich reward. Julia says in her confessional how it's great how they keep winning, but she views Joe as a big target that needs to go. In his confessional, Joe is aware of how big of a target he is due to his prowess in challenges. While Joe is fishing, Julia, Julie, and Ron discuss blindsiding Joe. Ron wants Joe gone too, but he's having second thoughts since Joe is very valuable around camp. He collects the food and helps them win challenges. He thinks camp life would be miserable with him gone. However, Julie is adamant that Joe needs to go. She doesn't want the returnees to unite at the merge.


At the Manu camp, Wendy still doesn't want them to eat the chickens. Eric notes in his confessional how the chickens are now part of the island. He views Wendy as someone difficult to work with in the game, but he's still concerned about the returnees. He says the game is a balancing act. We later see a scene with Eric, Victoria, and Gavin talking game. They discuss whom should go first between Aubry and Wendy. They view Wendy as someone who isn't a threat, so they would rather vote out Aubry. Afterwards, Victoria goes to talk game with Aubry. She proposes the two of them working together with Wendy to vote out Eric. Aubry is thrilled to hear this, but Aubry is actually Victoria's true target.


Over at the Lesu camp, they are struggling living on little food. David is having a hard time, but he refuses to give up. He even hopes to find a hidden immunity idol. While he is away, Kelley, Lauren, and Wardog discuss David's poor performance at the reward challenge. They agree he needs to go next if they lose the immunity challenge. However, Kelley and Wardog talk game without Lauren present, and Wardog proposes voting out Lauren next. Kelley is open to the idea since Wardog has been honest with her throughout the game thus far.


It's Day 13 on Extinction Island, and Chris comes across a box. Inside are scrolls with their names on them. He grabs his and hands the others out to Reem, Keith, and Rick. The scrolls are maps that will guide them to where they need to go next. They lead to two different trees with an advantage under them. They agree to eat rice before leaving, but Keith sneaks away alone. Reem, Chris, and Rick notice Keith's absence and realize he's left without them. They go trailing after him, and Chris shoves Keith away from the tree right as Keith was reaching for the advantage.. Chris receives the practice advantage. He's guessing it's the opportunity to practice for a challenge for the chance to reenter the game. Rick goes to the second tree, and he gets the second advantage. He's allowed to give someone still in the game an extra vote at the next tribal council.


It's time for the immunity challenge. They must swim out into the ocean and dive down to retrieve puzzle pieces. They must take the puzzle piece back to their pontoon before the next tribe member can retrieve the next puzzle piece. The first two tribes to complete the puzzle will win immunity. The challenge begins, and Lesu is struggling once again. Kelley is unable to retrieve the puzzle piece under the water. Manu is currently in the lead, but Kama is close behind them. Manu and Kama already have all their puzzle pieces and are working on solving them. Lesu still doesn't have their puzzle pieces as both Kelley and Lauren are unable to get any puzzle pieces. Wardog tries to get the puzzle piece for Lesu, and he finally gets their first one. Lesu are hoping for a comeback as Manu and Kama have yet to solve the puzzle. David is unable to get the second puzzle piece for Lesu, but Lauren manages to get the second piece. Remarkably, Lesu has managed to get on the platform with their puzzle pieces before either Manu or Kama have solved the puzzle. Kama eventually solves it, so Kama wins immunity! Aurora tries to give help to Manu, but Lesu manages to solve the puzzle before Manu. Lesu wins immunity!


The Manu tribe members return to camp, and the former Kama tribe members Aubry, Eric, Gavin, and Victoria agree to stay united and vote out Wendy. Aubry is relieved to hear this, but she is eager to make a move and vote out Eric. She hopes she, Victoria, and Wendy can vote together and vote out Eric. Aubry talks game to Victoria and Wendy, and she proposes this idea. Wendy is unsure and hesitant to agree, which frustrates Aubry. She doesn't think Wendy is someone she can work with after all. However, Aubry finds a hidden note in her bag. She received the extra vote advantage from Rick, but she doesn't know it's from Rick. This advantage is good until the Final 7. Aubry is wondering if she should save this advantage later or use it now to vote out Eric.


It's time for tribal council. This is the first time Aubry, Eric, Gavin, and Victoria have attended tribal council. Jeff begins the discussion by asking about the mood after the challenge. Gavin says the mood was calm, but Aubry says there were conversations happening after the challenge. Jeff asks Wendy if she's concerned since she's the odd person out since the other four have been on the same tribe since the beginning. Wendy is aware, but she's hoping for the best. Aubry says that they need to figure out which people they really connect with and can trust. Aubry is looking for her "black cat" to her "witch." Jeff points out how Aubry is a returning player, and Gavin says he doesn't view Aubry as a returnee. He says he has genuinely connected with Aubry. Eric says they all have to trust the people they trust and hopes he isn't being duped tonight. Aubry says she can sometimes overthink, but admits that things can be simpler than what they seem.. Afterwards, it's time for the vote.

Aubry is the fifth person voted out of Survivor: Edge of Extinction.


Aubry is shocked and calls them "unbelievable players" before wishing them luck and walking away. She comes across the signpost and says it's an easy decision to stay in the game. She grabs the torch and heads to Extinction Island.
The next morning, Aubry is having regrets. She is embarrassed since she had both an extra vote advantage and a hidden immunity idol in her possession. She's crying, but she says it can only go up from here.


It's time for the reward challenge. Kama and Lesu are shocked to see that Aubry was voted out, and Joe says that it doesn't seem like they are Kama strong anymore. For the challenge, the castaways must go over a series of obstacles and then unlock a chest with sandbags. They must then toss the sandbags into a bin before they can start throwing them at targets. The targets swivel until they each release a flag. The first two tribes to finish will win a pastry and coffee reward. The challenge begins, and Kama takes an early lead. Joe is having a lot of success tossing the sandbags at the targets, extending Kama's lead. Wardog struggles throwing the sandbags, so he switches out with Lauren. Joe manages to get both flags to raise for Kama, so Kama wins reward! And shortly afterwards, Gavin hits the targets until the flags raise for Manu. Manu wins reward! Lesu loses another challenge. In her confessional, Kelley says the Kama tribe has had a two week vacation since Joe is carrying them in challenges. She says that she wishes the game has been that easy for her, but it hasn't.


The Kama tribe enjoy their reward. Julie expresses her gratitude to Joe, but he's nervous if he'll continue to have a target on his back. They talk about Aubry getting voted out, and Aurora says it broke her heart to see her gone. Joe is feeling especially down to see Aubry gone since he knew he could trust her. In his confessional, he breaks down in tears as he's aware he can't rely on anyone in the game like he can rely on people back home. He says the challenge of the game is knowing how to adapt, but he is concerned that no one will want to work with him. His plan is to try to make other people seem like a bigger threat than him and keep the Kama tribe strong. He tells Julia that she'll be viewed as a threat by the other tribes too due to being on a winning tribe, so they need to stay united. She admits he has a point. In her confessional, she says that if the other tribes view her as a threat, then she'll have to consider how to play the game moving forward. However, she doesn't mention working with Joe long term.


Back at the Lesu camp, Lauren is struggling with the lack of food. She admits she's been crying for four days straight. Wardog notices how much Lauren is struggling, and he tells Kelley that she needs to be the next one gone. In her confessional, Kelley admits that she knows she has to vote out Lauren eventually. However, she's getting bothered by Wardog's demeanor. She feels like he just barks orders at people and crunches numbers all day. She talks to David about Wardog, and David agrees with her frustrations about him. David has been wanting Kelley voted out since the beginning of the game, but he admits in his confessional how he may need to work with Kelley moving forward.


At Extinction Island, they all receive another set of maps. This time, the maps have holes in them. All five of them go searching for a possible advantage. Rick believes the advantage is under the mast, but it's actually in the water. Reem points it out, and Keith goes and picks it up. The advantage tells him it's something to use against his biggest enemy by tying their hands with knots. Keith wants to use it against Chris. Reem is frustrated that Keith got the advantage since she was the one who saw it first. However, the rules state that the advantage is Keith's since he touched it first. Chris says he can't believe she gave away the advantage to Keith, and Reem snaps at Chris. She asserts that she did not give anything away and cusses Chris out. She believes Chris is calling her stupid enough to willingly give away an advantage. Aubry notes in her confessional how it's a dysfunctional family at Extinction Island.


It's time for the immunity challenge. They must go through a series of obstacles and solve a puzzle. The first tribe to solve the puzzle will win immunity. Two tribes will go to tribal council tonight. The challenge begins, and Joe helps Kama attain an early lead. However, the challenge becomes fairly even as all the tribes are working on the slide puzzle at the same time. However, Joe and Julia solve the puzzle first. Kama wins immunity! Jeff informs them that the two tribes will go to tribal council together and vote one person out..
The Manu tribe returns to camp, and Eric is aware how there is a chance they could draw rocks tonight since both Manu and Lesu have four tribe members. However, Wendy remembers how David is on the bottom of that tribe. She believes he would flip on them to vote out Kelley or Wardog. Regardless, all of Manu agree to go to rocks if it comes down to it. They all reassure each other that they will not flip. However, Victoria admits in her confessional that she's not willing to go to rocks. She will flip if she has to. Meanwhile on Lesu, Wardog asserts that they must target Wendy tonight since they don't see Eric, Gavin, and Victoria going to rocks for Wendy since she wasn't a part of their original tribe. However, Wardog is rubbing his other tribe members the wrong way. Wardog is also getting annoyed with Lauren, and he admits he would not go to rocks for Lauren. Wardog hopes to find a hidden immunity idol, which increases Kelley, David, and Lauren's frustrations with him. They are also annoyed how he doesn't contribute around camp, and they decide to go searching for the hidden immunity idol too. Kelley approaches Wardog and asks where he was. He lies and says he was down by the beach. However, she spots the hidden immunity idol attached to a tree behind his head. When Wardog walks away, Kelley grabs the idol and tells Lauren she got the idol. Lauren confesses to Kelley that she has a hidden immunity idol too. While planning on whether or not to play their idols, Lauren tells Kelley that she will not go to rocks if the other tribe votes for Wardog. She will flip and vote him out if Manu votes for Wardog tonight.
It's Night 16 and time for tribal council. Jeff asks Victoria if there was a difference when they returned to camp, and Victoria says there were no side conversations. They all talked as a group. Lauren also says that Lesu is united as one. Wardog says they have their plan and are sticking with it. Eric points out how they don't know how they are as a tribe, so they can't believe everything they are saying. Jeff asks Wendy her thoughts, and she says it's like a flashback seeing her old tribe members again. She says she feels like in the middle. David says that they still consider Wendy an original Manu tribe member, but Eric says that Manu wasn't so nice to Wendy before. Eventually, Wendy whispers to David that he has a spot with them. Soon enough, there are several whispered conversations as Kelley and Wardog whisper to each other and Eric and Gavin whisper to each other. David pulls Wendy aside, and they whisper into each other's ears. Afterwards, it's time for the vote.
Jeff reads the votes. The first vote is for…

It's a tie vote. Lauren and Wendy will not vote as everyone else votes again. There are more whispered conversations before the vote. Eric tries to make a deal with Wardog and David, but Wardog points out how they just met him. Afterwards, they all cast their votes again as they can only vote for either Wendy or Lauren.
Jeff reads the votes again.

Wendy is the sixth person voted out of Survivor: Edge of Extinction.
Wendy takes the news well and is smiling as she exits the game. She's looking forward to a burger and a shower, but she comes across the signpost. Without any hesitation, she grabs the torch and heads to Extinction Island.
