Hell's Kitchen begins tonight with the first time this season is men (red) versus women (blue) after Chef Gordon Ramsay said it wasn't working with Rookies Vs. Veterans. Let's see how it goes tonight. Sous Chefs are Christina Wilson (blue) and James "Jocky" Petrie (red).
Chef Ramsay greets the chefs and has special guest Stephan Moccio, Grammy and Academy Award composer for both Miley Cyrus and Celine Dion. Today, each team is to work with the same protein but is to cook it 7 different ways – wood burning oven, baked, grilled, poached, hot smoked, steamed, pan-seared and shallow fried; the protein is fish! Maitre d Marino brings out a table of smelts but suddenly a massive Halibut drops from the ceiling and Chef Ramsay gives them 45 minutes to create their dishes. They only have one piece of fish each, so margin of error.
To help Ramsay judge the dishes is award winning Michelin Star Chef David Lefevre. Bret and Gizzy bring up their grilled halibut. Gizzy gets the point. Steamed Halibut is next with Mia and Chris, and again the blue team gains the point; Chef Lefevre wanting to take the rest of Mia's sauce home. Poaches halibut is up with Kevin and Roe. Kevin finally earns the red team a point. Scotley and Kanae bring up their hot smoked halibut, with Kanae giving the blue a bigger lead; its now 3-1 for blue.
Ariel and Jose have shallow fried halibut, neither Chefs can pick which is better so both teams earn a point. Pan seared halibut is next with Motto and Heather, both dishes are fantastic again but Heather's isn't quite seasoned enough; giving Motto the point and the red team still a chance. It is 4-3 for the blue team. The wood burning, oven baked halibut is up between Trev and T; Trev wants to bury her so bad. Chef Ramsay wants them to both take their dishes back in line, asking Chef Lefevre which team gets the point and he ultimately chooses T's dish, meaning Blue team wins 5-3.
The ladies learn they will be traveling to the top of a skyscraper, as their courage will be tested when they walk a narrow plank at the top of the building and if they survive that they will fight the zombie apocalypse. He is sending them on a trip with a virtual reality experience. The red team's punishment is waiting on a dumpster full of manure, mix that with the restaurant's compost. Kevin is furious with losing.
The men are cheesed at how they stink of rotten food and crap, while they women are welcomed to VR Territory, where they watch each other make fools of themselves. Back at Hell's Kitchen, Motto talks about how he is not slacking off saying hard work doesn't scare him, thinking of his grandfather and how hard he had to work. Kevin talks about his ski resort and how it is a zipline park in the summer; the only reason he is back is for revenge. In the middle of their punishment it starts to rain.
When the women return, there is one more present for them from Chef Ramsay, its the Vitamix; all of them thrilled with it.
Marino opens Hell's Kitchen for dinner as guests arrive including stars like Actor Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Actor Carly Hughes (Pippin) and Actor Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest). Chris and Heather will work table side with a mussel dish in a saffron broth, when Marino shows them how to make it, Chef Ramsay asks if he plans on setting the place on fire and places a fire extinguisher beside him.
Chef Ramsay begins calling appetizers for both kitchens and right off the hop, T is frustrated with Ariel, insisting she doesn't touch her station. In the red kitchen, Chris is not doing anything at table side, so Ramsay tells him to help in the kitchen but everyone doesn't want to help him. Kevin asks him if he can handle the scallops and right away he starts messing them up. Kevin is done, the entire team tries to find a spot to literally hide Chris; meanwhile the blue team has already moved onto entrees.
Mia is cuts into four Wellingtons before Chef Ramsay stops her, they are all under cooked and he demands to know why she has cut them all. He calls all the ladies back, saying they should have told her what to do while his back was turned. Heather feels Mia is strong when she cooks her own dishes but when it comes to service she becomes undone.
Bret and Trev both try to talk to Scotley who is on garnish, so when they bring up all the dish Chef Ramsay gets angry telling Scotley that he is just too casual for him and not too sharp for him. He may be a good cook but not sharp enough. In the blue kitchen, Gizzy feels nervous about the lamb, so Chef Ramsay checks on it when T tells the kitchen to slow down and make sure the lamb is done. Ramsay tells Gizzy she needs to start cooking her own food as all this is strange to him.
T feels Gizzy needs to trust her own instinct or it will be a problem for the blue team. Chef reveals the lamb was perfectly cooked and she needs to stop worrying. Chef calls the blue team to the back, pointing to Mia and Gizzy, saying they need to run their station and if they sink the blue station they are going home, ordering them to sort it out.
Kevin screws up again only cooking one salmon and attempts to make them in 6 minutes but of course Chef Ramsay notices and calls them to the back of the kitchen. He voices his concern about how they are cooking the salmon, Kevin asks if he thinks it is raw and Chef asks if he is being funny. He tells them to get in the store room and sort out their differences. Scotley says he is doing garnish and can't do the pass.
He is completely fed up when they bring him ice cold sauce and throws it in the sink telling the red team that he has had enough and how pathetic that every table has been a battle. He tells them to do something as a team, have a great discussion as a team and fk off. Pick two individuals they want to get rid off and get out of the kitchen. The blue team is able to finish off their dinner service, but Chef Ramsay calls Gizzy, telling her she needs to find her voice as she cooked everything on point. He wants her to help him, help her; Christina reassures her too, saying she did a good job.
Back in the dining room, Chef Ramsay asks Trev who the first nomination is and he says Scotley as garnish was one of the problems, especially with timing. The second nomination was Kevin because of the salmons that came back and that is where everything started to break down. Kevin feels he has fight in him, confident, communicated and this is definitely a wake up call. Scotley thinks he is a good chef who is determined to win, and although he could have communicated better, he isn't ready to lay down. He doesn't feel he went down hard like the fish station. Kevin fights back saying he didn't give up like Scotley did.
Chef says the person going home tonight is Kevin, asking for his jacket, saying he isn't feeling the desire. He wishes him nothing but success as Kevin thanks him for the opportunity. As Kevin walks out, he admits he didn't have the fire that he had last time he was in the competition. He reminds them all to remain passionate about this and to never underestimate that passion.
"Kevin was a stand out in his first time in Hell's Kitchen, unfortunately this time around he seemed more determined to head back to the ski slopes than to the Las Vegas strip!"
