Oh, what a difference 24 hours made on Grey's Anatomy episode 17, titled "One Day Like This." Owen arrived in Germany to declare his love for Teddy, but their romantic reunion was short-lived. April may finally make amends with God after getting a lesson about faith from a dying rabbi. But it was Meredith who could finally have found a suitable Derek follow-up after meeting Nick Mars (Scott Speedman), a handsome transplant surgeon and recent kidney recipient who collapsed at Grey Sloan Memorial during an organ recovery.

Grey's Anatomy Recap: A New Love Interest for Meredith?>>>

Two Strikes

Meredith has been shafted in the romance department. She lost the love of her life, the world-renowned neurosurgeon and all-around perfect male specimen, Derek Shepherd. But while life might not always go on for the patients at Seattle's fictitious hospital, there has to be a post-McDreamy existence for Meredith.

Meredith jumped back into dating a little too soon when she hooked up with hot army surgeon Will Thorpe. It's a bit unfair that Meredith's rebound was intense, gorgeous and sensitive because he never stood a chance. After a couple of good dates turned into even better sex, Meredith had a total freak out, and Dr. Thorpe was out.

Next came the mildly-roguish Nathan Riggs who proved to be good for some car sex but came with a lot of complications and baggage of his own. Riggs possessed a modicum of charm, but the heart surgeon was hardly in Meredith's league. Meredith and fans alike weren't heartbroken when Riggs was reunited with his long-lost love and Owen's sister, Megan. The twosome parted as friends, and it looked like Meredith was going to be content to perform award-winning surgeries, raise her kids and fulfill her physical needs with the help of a detachable shower head.

Third Time's a Charm

But out of nowhere, Meredith is suddenly back in the game, and Nick Mars could be the second great love of Meredith's life. Mars and Mer were destined to be a "ship" that passed in the night if he hadn't suffered complications from his kidney transplant, but fate intervened. Even the most steadfast McDreamy fans couldn't help but be excited by Mars. It's not just that he's smokin' hot -- the man looked gorgeous in the midst of a medical crisis -- but there was a palpable chemistry between him and the often standoffish Meredith Grey.

It's hard to ignore how perfect a match "McMinnesota" (or "McMayo") is for Meredith. He's single but has taken on the responsibility of raising his niece because his sister is a hot mess -- Meredith can relate to having crazy relatives. He's a transplant recipient while Meredith gave up a good portion of her liver to save her father. He's so dedicated to his patients that he went back to work a mere five weeks after receiving his new kidney, and he respects Meredith's accomplishments but isn't intimidated by them.

Meredith isn't exactly an open book, but Mars was able to get her to reveal her Plan B (what she would do if she couldn't be a doctor anymore.) Who knew Meredith would move to a small town in Italy where everyone seems to live to a ripe old age, drinks wine, raises chickens, grows vegetables and never gets sick? After 14 seasons, it's nice to know fans can still be surprised by Meredith, which is why she not only needs a new love interest, but one viewers can get on board with.

Meredith has always maintained that when it comes to romance, she's loved, she's lost and she's done. But after meeting Mars, she confided in Alex that the Minnesota doc made her feel things she hadn't felt since Derek (Mars made us all feel things we hadn't felt since Derek.) Interestingly, Speedman isn't the first Felicity alum to woo a Grey Sloan Memorial doctor. Scott Foley -- Noel Crane on the teen drama -- played Henry, Teddy's tumor-ridden dreamboat (now deceased) husband.

Mars is recovered and presumably on his way back to Minnesota, and Meredith will focus on replicating mini organs, and that means viewers will have to endure several recycled relationships and the dreaded "Jaggie" while we wait and hope for Mars to return.

Is it time for Meredith to finally move on? Do you hope Scott Speedman returns? Is Mars Meredith's Plan B? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
